The Best Whiskies in the World, Awards Special
Master of Malt Laphroaig 10 Years Old 1998
Single Malt - Scotland - 55.50% 8 The perfect image of the countryside in autumn on a wet chilly morning, with a mixture of fog and smoke hovering over the fields and the woods. Very suggestive.
Michael Collins Blend
Blended - Ireland - 40.00% 8 Visually, a very attractive whisky – rich amber and gloriously viscous. If my suspicions are correct, an earlier expression of this whisky reminded me of a Peshwari Nan. Must be shared and discussed...
Midleton Very Rare
Blended - Ireland - 40.00% 8 In general, Midleton is a bit too elegant for me, but this is a lovely vintage. The Yquem of whiskies?
Midleton Very Rare
Pot Still - Ireland - 40.00% 8 Don't know how Barry Walsh keeps this standard up year on year, the most robust MVR in ages. Bravo!
Miyagikyo 22 Years Old 1986 Single Cask
Single Malt - Japan - 63.00% 8 The soft juicy Miyagikyo shows its darkside.
Murray McDavid 1987,
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 8 Both the name and the medicinal character suggests the distillery of origin.
Murray McDavid Highland Park 1979
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Very good indeed as a lightish, delicate, interpretation of Highland Park.
Murray McDavid Mission II Linkwood 1973
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Very sophisticated bittersweet flavours. Adults only.
Murray McDavid Springbank 1965
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 The characteristic salt and coconut characteristics of Springbank are very evident in this bottling, but perhaps overwhelmingly so. I may need more time to understand this one.
Oban Classic Malts Distillers Edition 1992
- Scotland - 43.00% 8 An appetizing dram like a dried fruit cake. Rich and malty. A drop of water will be enough to cheer it up. More knocks it down.
Oban Distillers Edition, Montilla
Single Malt - Scotland - 43.00% 8 Demonstrably an evocative whisky. Salty and winey, but neither as overt as in the comparable Glenmorangie Fino.
Old & Rare Platinum Glen Garioch 35 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 56.00% 8 This has lasted superbly for its age, proof that Glen Garioch is a seriously impressive malt, one that improves with lengthy maturation.
Old & Rare Platinum The Macallan, 28 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.20% 8 Have this without water. Hinting at complexity.
Old Fitzgerald Very Special
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 45.00% 8 Surprising. Seems subdued at first, then shines through when oxygenated.
Old Forester 2009 Birthday Bourbon 1997 12 Years Old
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 48.50% 8 Another bourbon? A bit austere but elegant and complex. I found more pleasure on nosing than tasting.
Old Forester Birthday Bourbon
Bourbon - U.S.A. - 47.50% 8 Balanced and complex. Recommended.
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 15 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Too chimney-like for me. Lacks the balance between sweetness and dryness you need in such a peaty dram.
Old Malt Cask Ardbeg 28 Years Old, The Ardbeggeddon 1972, Sherry Cask
Single Malt - Scotland - 48.40% 8 One of the best Ardbegs I have ever tasted. Full range of the distillery's typical flavours, lyrically combined.
Old Malt Cask Clynelish 23 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 All comes together at the end.
Old Malt Cask Director's Tactical Selection, 18 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 This has it all but goes about it in an unflashy manner. Good.
Old Masters Girvan 15 Years Old, Cask 110636
Single Grain - Scotland - 60.40% 7 Astonishingly full in both body and flavour for a grain whisky.
Old Pulteney 12 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 8 Forget about the first nose and enjoy that luscious exotic profile. But no water, thank you.
Old Pulteney 15 Years Old, Cask Strength
Single Malt - Scotland - 57.80% 8 A slightly odd melange of flavours and textures...but it works.
Old Pulteney 17 Years Old
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 A great combination of complexity and simplicity. A liquid fruit basket. Yummy.
Old Pulteney Isabella Fortuna WK499
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 A charming dram. Rich, elegant, vibrant. A perfect uplifting cordial.
