• Adelphi Balmenach 1990, 11 Years Old, Cask 507

Can whiskies be handsome and romantic? This is a seductive bottling.

• Adelphi Bladnoch 22 Years Old, Single cask

On the dry side for this whisky.

• Adelphi Breath of Highlands 1985, 20 Years Old

• Adelphi Bruichladdich 13 Years Old

Interesting, but not typical.

• Adelphi Bruichladdich 30 Years Old

It is more substantial than people think, as this bottling shows.

• Adelphi Caol Ila 11 Years Old

A curiously insipid bottling.

• Adelphi Clynelish 11 Years Old

I normally rate Clynelish very highly, but this bottling leaves its fireworks until the last minute, and with more heat than light.

• Adelphi Clynelish 12 Years Old, Cask 3280

Pungent and vibrant but lacks the beautiful Clynelish style.

• Adelphi Clynelish 16 Years Old

The most oily of the three, and very assertive in the finish.

• Adelphi Clynelish 1989, 13 Years Old

Not the most peaty Clynelish I have tasted, but a lovely, distinctive whisky.

• Adelphi Clynelish 1995, Cask 12783

Quite a character. Water mellows the spicy burn. Would match well with a chicken “à la crème”.

• Adelphi Clynelish 27 Years Old, Cask 2568

A robust, straight-ahead Clynelish, which is a great thing.

• Adelphi Dailuaine 21 Years Old, Cask 4150

The confident virtues of a good Speyside whisky: malt, heather and peat. Well-combined but without either refinements or flourishes.

• Adelphi Dalmore 11 Years Old

A big, rich bottling, but some of the Dalmore character has been overpowered.

• Adelphi Glen Grant 1969

Holds up very well in the middle but the woodiness at the end is overpowering.

• Adelphi Glen Grant 1969

Glen Grant is a delicate whisky and does not always benefit from long maturation. This bottling is on the cusp. The distillery character can still be discerned, but only just.

• Adelphi Glen Grant 1970, 27 Years Old, Cask 7638

Enough character and complexity to withstand the heavy oakiness, but beginning to show its age.

• Adelphi Glen Grant 1970, 31 Years Old, Cask 1036

The better balanced of these two Glen Grants. The more integrated flavours. Seems to have matured better.

• Adelphi Glenlossie 1981

• Adelphi Highland Park 12 Years Old

I like the richness but lacks the balance, roundness and complexity of a great Highland Park.

• Adelphi Highland Park 16 Years Old

This bottling does not have the heathery profile of the official bottlings. Drink with water.

• Adelphi Highland Park 17 Years Old, Cask 2903

That dance might have been led by Fred Astaire. The great all-rounder in lean and energetic mood. Makes it look easy. Try it with a late-night movie.

• Adelphi Highland Park 1981 24 Years Old

• Adelphi Invergordon 1964

A rich grain whisky on the fruity side. Interesting.

• Adelphi Knockdhu 1989, 12 Years Old, Cask 286

Delicious. Perilously drinkable. Drink it with dessert. No, pour it all over the ice-cream.

• Adelphi Linkwood 17 Years Old

Linkwood always evokes thoughts of sweetmeats, sometimes delicate, on other occasions more robust. This is in the latter mood: down-to-earth sweetness.

• Adelphi Port Ellen 1975, 24 Years Old

Seems to have faded slightly with age.

• Adelphi Rosebank 1992, 9 Years Old

The aroma promised much, but the palate is curiously drying. Rosebank was never peaty, and this is too young to be woody, so I don't know the origin of that harshness.

• Adelphi Royal Brackla 27 Years Old, Cask 5467

The best Brackla I have tasted. Night-cap?

• Adelphi Shannon Grain 1991, 9 Years Old, Cask 10839

For a grain whiskey, it has plenty of flavours, but they do not hang together very well.

• Adelphi Shannon Grain Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Flavoursome for a grain, but neither especially clean nor well rounded.

• Adelphi Slaney Single Malt Irish Whiskey

Pleasant, soothing, sociable.

• Adelphi Suir Peated Malt

Lacks the rich smokiness of Connemara.

• Adelphi Tamdhu 1985

Judging from the very pale colour, the wood did not have much positive input. Hence, perhaps, the lack of Tamdhu's sometime elegance.

• Adelphi Tamdhu 1991 15 Years Old

• Adelphi Teaninich 31 Years Old

Well-matured, amazing for its age.

• Adelphi The Macallan 1988

I prefer my Macallan with its typical sherry character.

• Adelphi Tullibardine 35 Years Old, Cask 2112

Tullibardine is a gentle, civilised, malt that seems to live in obscurity. Nice to be reminded of its existence. Could be a golfers dram – the distillery is near Gleneagles.
