Martin Green joined Bonhams in 2008 as head of the Whisky Department and now has over 25 years experience in the specialised field of Whisky Auctions.
Bonhams is the only International auction house that specialises in auctioning old, rare, collectable and affordable whisky. It holds four sales a year in Edinburgh (February, June, October and December) two in New York (April and October) and two Hong Kong (May and November).
Although Scottish whiskies are the main focus of each auction, sales also include whiskies from Ireland, Japan and America. Sellers and buyers alike come from all over the world.
Limited edition and rare releases of single malts are especially sought after from distilleries such as Ardbeg, Bowmore, Balvenie, Dallas Dhu, Dalmore, Glen Grant, Glen Moray, Glenmorangie, Glenfarclas, Glenfiddich, Glenlivet, Glenturret, Highland Park, Knockando, Lagavulin, Laphroaig, Linkwood, Longrow, The Macallan, Mortlach, Port Ellen, Rosebank, Springbank and Talisker.
Rare single malt bottlings from closed distilleries and those of particular historical interest are also popular with collectors as are old and rare blended whiskies dating from the 1950s and earlier as well as commemorative bottlings of both blended and single malt.
The market has remained in a remarkably smooth upward trajectory in recent years. Prices in Hong Kong, in particular, have continued to rise with collectable single malts in greatest demand. In Edinburgh and New York, price is driven up by competition from buyers located in the Far East and USA in addition to the continued interest from European buyers.
