In search of the world's best whiskies
This is the third time we have held the Best of the Best. But as Dominic Roskrow reports, this is the biggest and most ambitious attempt yet to find the world's best whiskies
March 2005, Issue 46, page 18
Ballaglass Blended Scotch Whisky
Blended - Scotland - 40.00% 7 A grain heavy blend which has a lovely vibrancy and just enough malt character to add depth.
Lombard Anchor Bay
Blended Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 7 A satisfying, nourishing, clean malt. But where is the bay?
Lombard Bowmore 1989
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 6 For a relatively young Bowmore, this seems somewhat tired.
Lombard Brora 1982
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Every time I pick up the glass, I find new flavours. A Scottish aquavit to send the Danes packing.
Lombard Caperdonich 1968
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 6 Less fruity than I remember. An unusual afterdinner malt.
Lombard Glen Grant 1964
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 7 I usually find delicate old Glen Grants to be overwhelmed by oak. This example makes for a mature dram with considerable complexity.
Lombard Gold Label
Blended - Scotland - 40.00% 8 Fresh, summery and very easy drinking. Nothing to dislike here, at all.
Lombard Golden Harvest
Blended Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 6 Too young? Or a restricted vatting? Not very exciting.
Lombard Highland Park 1989
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Very slow, long, flavour development. Gets up to speed at the very end.
Lombard Lochside 1981
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 7 Lochside was a capricious malt, but it is missed nonetheless.
Lombard Mortlach 1990
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 6 Extraordinarily pale colour. The floweriness was perhaps a hint at Mortlach but, if I were served this out of context, would I recognise it as whisky? I might guess at aquavit rather than usquebaugh.
Lombard Old Masters
Blended - Scotland - 40.00% 7 A whisky that has plenty going on but stops short at being exceptional in any of its merits. Perfect as an introduction to the category.
Lombard Rosebank 1989
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 A good example. Such a love potion, from a distillery that no one loved enough to keep alive.
Lombard Smoking Ember
Blended Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 8 A ‘love it or hate it' islander. Bold and uncompromising. And so charming.
Lombard Speyside 1988
Blended Malt - Scotland - 43.00% 7 Straightforward but bracing and charming with plenty of Speyside character.
Lombard Springbank 1965
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 8 Robust, but lacks the delicacy and structure of the best Springbanks.
Lombard Springbank 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Jumps and bites. This is the young Springbank, not yet the mature sophisticate.
Lombard Springbank 1991
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Not your average Campbeltown malt. It bears more than a passing resemblance to Arran!
Lombard Jewels of Scotland Brora 1982 Cask #876
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.10% 9 A classic American oak aged, mature Highland Malt.
Lombard Jewels of Scotland Glenury Royal 1973 Cask #6867
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 9 Not enough space to describe the brilliance of this whisky!
Lombard Jewels of Scotland Lochside 1981 Cask #612
Single Malt - Scotland - 50.00% 8 Neat, it's tight. With water it's straightforward, but pleasant.
Lombard Jewels of Scotland Springbank 1969
Single Malt - Scotland - 41.10% 8 I'm lost for words!
Lombard Scotch Whisky Ltd Dhoon Glen
Blended - Scotland - 40.00% 7 A pleasant blend. Rich cereal profile. Good balance.
Lombard Single Malt Glen Keith 1985
Single Malt - Scotland - 41.90% 8 A lovely mature malt which skilfully blends maturity and freshness.
Lombard Single Malt Springbank 1965
Single Malt - Scotland - 46.00% 9 This can only come from one distillery in Scotland. Unique and stunning!
Lombard Single Malt Teaninich 1984
Single Malt - Scotland - 40.00% 8 Another whisky where the palate fails to deliver to what the nose promises!
Whisky Shack Company Storm
Blended Malt - Scotland - 43.00% 8 Well developed, balanced and very easy to drink. Another solid introduction to malt whisky for a newbie.
