Article Suggestions for Whisky Magazine

Postby DanAir » Tue Sep 16, 2008 12:05 am

There's another topic here discussing the latest issue of Whisky Magazine, and the difficulty of finding relevant, quality articles, which go me thinking... why don't we suggest our own topics, who knows, they may take notice

So a couple of my suggestions to start us off:

Changes in whisky over the last century
A comparison of different tasting glasses
More behind the scenes distillery stuff, particularly Master Distillers role

I'm a relatively new reader myself so these might have all been done before but enough to get us started. Gold star for the best suggestion :D

- An in-depth piece on the English Whisky Distillery
(after all, it's in Norfolk and a 'stone's throw' from the
Editor);

- Articles on local tasting events (like those held at
Nicholls & Perks) in Stourbridge. Who was there, what
was tasted, what were reactions.

- Profile of a reader (this works really well in footie
programmes, where they pick a reader each issue
and focus on his particular footie likes, dislikes and
memories).

- Maybe a regular piece on 'miniatures' (viz the recent
Kilchoman New Spirit set and the upcoming Blasda
pack).

- Supermarket own labels. We all toy with the idea
of trying them, but have we the courage. Send in the
mag's tasters.

-effects of yeast and barley strain on the whisky flavours (i.e., some more scientific articles)
-collectors section.
-more in depth articles (e.g., on the different types of sherry casks or on a distillery )...

There are so many stories to be told by the people within the industry so interviews are welcome. Also so many companies are gone for ever. Research into these by gone producers would be enlightening. I have a preference for Ian's technical insights so hope his inspiration is well fed.

What would be of real interest are articles that challenges the establishment - get into the dirt a little. I doubt that wil happen as the current WM setup depends entirely on the support of the industry so we have nicely sanitised articles that don't actually say very much.
Seasoned journalists like Dave Broom should cut free to report on what's really happening - shake things up a bit and put the money makers on the spot. What's really happening in the whisky world? is it really as rosey as we are told? After all, HBOS was on a secure footing wasn't it?

Good idea Criefty, but I, as you, doubt it will happen.

Meanwhile, we have a discussion on here about "great whisky bars of the world", why not travel the world - or use local people to visit some of them and feature one per month in the mag.

I'll soon be able to offer The Arc as a starter if you wish .... :D

On reflection, as well as whisky bars, why not report on whisky collectors and enthusiasts too.
Basically, WM currently focuses on the whisky industry, but why not have a regular article on the whisky public, as in actual bars, collectors, enthusiasts, clubs ..... etc.

I think members of the WM community and the magazine would be better off pooling our resources and buying some posh yet obscure distillery. Maybe Tamnavullin. lol :insane:

Anyway, when do I show up for my photo shoot?
