I went to the Chicago Scott's Scottish Fest and Highland Games yesterday. They had a whisky tent, apparently sponsored by Whisky Live. This was good and bad. One one hand, they had lots of whisky. On the other, I didn't see much of the games.
But I did have...
Oban Distillers Edition, 1996
Scott's Inverleven 1979-2004
Scott's Auchentoshan 1983-2004
Scott's Caol Ila 1984-2006
Scott's Bunna 1977-2005
Gordon & MacPhail's Glenallachie 1999 12-year
Gordon & MacPhail's Caol Ila 2004 6-year
Few rye whisky
Lark (Tasmanian single malt)
Four Roses Small Batch bourbon
So that was pretty cool. At first, I was a bit disappointed at the tiny pours, but in hindsight, this allowed me to try many more whiskies than I could have. Of all these, I'd sampled only the Ardbegs, Laphroiag and Lagvulin before. I was by no means staggering out of there when I was done.
The small pours (1/4 ounce?) violated the three-sips rule, for tasting, but having a full-sized sample wouldn't have helped much, since it was such a poor environment for tasting. It was an open-air tent situated near the food vendors (hmm, do I detect cooked meats on the nose?), there were cigars and it was very windy.
Special props to the crew from Binny's!
