Whiskies of the World Expo 2008

Postby lohssanami » Mon Jan 14, 2008 6:30 pm

How many of your are planning to attend this year?

WoW Expo 2008

I've never been to one, and I believe I might make it to this event.

Yeah...I'll wait to see a pour list too. I'd hate for my first tasting event to be a dud.

I compared the original list I put up with the one currently on the celticmalts site, and there are a few additions.

Linkwood
Tullibardine
Brora
Dallas Dhu
Inchgower
Port Ellen

There haven't been any that have dropped out of the original list, and I'm pretty excited to see these additions. We'll see who is actually pouring later.

Here is the link with the list of Distilleries and Independant Bottlers from celticmalts dot com.

The two Anchor's were added this week.

I emailed Celtic Malts dot com asking if they will provide a pour list, and this is what I received.

"No, we wont have a pour list available. Thanks for the thread"

The list seems good, but if you can't confirm who is pouring, then I may have to re-think this event. Anyone have any experience on the average percentage of pouring participants?

I probably misunderstood the purpose of a pour list. I was thinking that it would list which exhibitors were pouring, whereas it seems a pour list is really to list the expressions as you have cleared up for me. Thanks for the clarification.

I'm learning slowly. :headbang:

Definitely interest is still up.

Sometimes I feel a little slow when I see terms fly through the forums that I don't quite understand, but it gets easier little by little.

Thanks for the help you've given since I've been around.

I'll be there for sure. I'm cutting my Easter vacation short just so that I can make it to the seminars on Friday.

It's interesting that Pernod Ricard is not at all represented. They didn't return my phone calls either...

I'll be working behind the scenes on Saturday too, I just don't know where yet.

I just got my ticket in the mail yesterday, and I may have recruited a few more people for the event. We might even have a limo take us up there, but I'll confirm that possibility later this week.

Good times ahead!!!

hi Everyone

Just wanted to jump in here since you're discussing my Expo-
There are lots of comments about the issue of sheer numbers of whiskies at the show. Id like you to know that the WoW Expo is a show that really strives to differentiate itself from other whisky events. Our goal is not and has never been to have a longer list of whisky than anyone. Our goal is to bring in as many interesting, unique and new launch whiskies as we can along with a solid collection of the 'traditional' favorites. We make room every year for start up distilleries, artisanal whiskies that have never been shown before and a speakers forum (and our new and very unique Whisky University!) that includes brilliant new voices in the spirits world that are generally unable to speak at other shows because the cost for them to do so is prohibitive.

We started this policy years ago when with our very first Expo we brought in St George and some other small producers which had shown before. Lance Winters was also on our speakers forum that year (back 9 years ago) only because we were more interested in having great new voices than in making an extra 2500 dollars from their appearances.

As the show has grown and developed, we focus strongly on the whisky lifestyle which means, as one example, booths being devoted to artisanal food creators and purveyors so that people can learn more about pairing fine whisky and fine food. We bring in music, hold cigar pairings and always have a selection of Celtic themed booths with various art/craft display. We were also the first show to bring in liquor retailers and continue to do so each year.

The Expo is a show to be enjoyed on its on merits. We have no interest in comparing it to other shows or following anyone elses template. Its a truly great show with an amazing attendee base (has been and continues to be more largely attended than any other show in the US) who appreciate the very personal effort that is the Whiskies of the World Expo.

Our emphasis on independent bottlers and new spirits gives us an incredible range for sampling..but yes, each year we have to 'trade off' space for those exhibitors and a couple 'traditional' exhibiotors will be left out and will return in a following year.
We keep things fresh, exciting and different and work hard to keep the Expo educational and truly fun...not a drunk-fest.

I hope you'll join us and experience this show for itself. Any of you who are on this posting board and who would like to come to the show are also invited to join our best Dram Whisky Club gathering Friday early evening after the seminars and Whisky University are over. You can email me when you buy your tickets and Ill tell you where the gathering is being held this year.

Cheers

Hello Riannon and thanks for jumping in and giving us more information on the event.

Unlike Mikeymad, I have never been to any show or tasting, but I believe this will more than exceed my expectations. I look forward to not only tasting the fine spirits, but also seeing how food pairing will work with each malt.

Thank you for the Friday invitation, and this may provide some inspiration to sign up for a Friday class prior to the gathering.

See you in a few weeks!

In terms of last year and what was presented...

I went to last year's event, and admit compared to prior it wasn't the most memorable of the 6 or so WoWs I've been fortunate enough to attend.

However, (from an independent source), I understood that last year's event was forced to a date in April, (first time as I don't recall it ever being in any other month but March), which put the event with-in 24hrs of Malt Advocate's WhiskyFest in Chicago.

The one thing I would politely whisper to Riannon (so she can whisper it to them)... there could be a riot if the Ardbeg table runs completely dry by 8PM again. Other than that glitch and them not pulling enough stock for the event, the rest was understandable and actually a great time - in spite of. :smoke:

Looking forward!

Sorry Randall, my comment in the other thread had to do with making it to SF on Friday night. I'm still going!

There are 5 of us going up, but I'm not sure of the transportation yet.

MikeyMad- Are you wearing a tie or jacket? I noticed the description said no t-shirts, cutoffs, shorts or ripped jeans, and a jacket or tie is "requested" on Saturday. What have they been like in the past? 80-20 for jacket tie? More? Less?

Just wondering as I hate wearing jacket or tie if I can help it.
