Exclusive Highland Park Tasting Event in New York City

Postby Whiskychic » Mon Feb 04, 2008 7:29 pm

Great Event if You're in New York!:
Hosted by Martin Daraz, Highland Park Brand Ambassador, this is an opportunity to sample a minimum of three Highland Park Single Cask bottlings alongside generous pours of the existing line of award winning 12, 15, 18, 25 and 30 year old whiskies. Named Distillery of The Year at The 2007 San Francisco Spirits Competition, the Highland Park Distillery's Single Cask program has won accolades like Import Malt of The Year from Malt Advocate as well as being featured in many critics' top ten lists.
These extremely limited edition bottlings have long since been sold to collectors all around the world. Some casks have only produced 100 bottles. This is your only chance to be amongst the lucky few in the USA to sample these unique drams. There will be an auction of exclusive items at this tasting.

Due to the nature of this event attendance is strictly limited to 40 people. All proceeds to benefit The Shalimar a not -for-profit theater company.

Tickets can be purchased online at: http://www.theatermania.com/content/sho ... how/141230

If we hadn't just had the Forum's HP tasting, I would've jumped all over this! Dang...

That said, it was lots of fun hangin' out with Mikey and Ganga! :D

Thanks for the offer Kim. If you can discount the ticket I've already purchased, I'm all ears. If not I think I'll still be able to enjoy myself.

This HP tasting was great. It was my first tasting so I don't have a measure to compare against, but I certainly enjoyed myself. The guy running it, Martin, was entertaining and informative and the folks from The Shalimar including Kim (Whiskychic) were excellent hosts. I would say that the audience was a good cross section of new and experienced drinkers with some industry types thrown in.

We tried the 12, 15, 18, 25 and 30 yr plus four single casks. I'm not much of a note taker or have much of a memory, but I believe the single casks were:
a 14yr "Texas" bottling
a 14 yr "Beltramos" bottling
a 27 yr "Oklahoma" bottling
and another 27 yr that eludes me.

All four bottlings were different and unique. The Texas bottling was very well received and the Oklahoma bottling I thought was sublime. And it is now only a matter of time before I grab myself a bottle of the HP30.

They're was someone their taking good notes who was going to email them to me but I haven't received anything yet. (This last sentence is for ash005)

Afterwards we were welcome to hang around and chat and finish off the open bottles. I was part of the last dram of the night which combined the dregs of each of the bottles into one. Nice result.

The night ended with an auction of the following:
Lot 1: Macallan 17 yr Fine Oak, HP 18, HP 25, 3-pack of Harviestoun Ola Dubh and a choice of one of the four single casks. Winning bid was $950
Lot 2: Macallan 17 yr Fine Oak, HP 18, HP 30, 3-pack of Harviestoun Ola Dubh and a choice of one of the four single casks. Winning bid was $1200
Lot 3: A personal tasting led by Martin for 20-30 people at the place of your choosing with all of the whisky provided. Martin also hinted that a taste of the upcoming HP40 would be on hand. Winning bid $4000.

All of the bids were out of my range but it was a fun time. Great whisky, great conversation, great time. I'll be keeping a look out for future tastings.

Great report Jobi! Sounds like a great night, and 9 great whiskies. I especially loved hearing about, "Afterwards we were welcome to hang around and chat and finish off the open bottles." Fantastic, what a night it must've been.

Jobi,

I wasn't aware that Beltramos had done a 14 yo bottling of HP. I've had the 15 yo and 19 yo. I wonder how that compares. I've also tried the "Lonestar" bottling and "Grapevine" bottling that were both 15 yo. Hmm. Now what do I do?

Basically sounds like I need to go find a bunch of single cask bottlings. :)

good report Jobi.

Our event in Dallas was also very enjoyable. A sell out crowd that doubled our usual monthly tasting numbers, I think. We paid a quarter of what you did but I would have gladly paid more for the chance at tasting some more single cask bottlings.
We had the 12, 15, 18, 25 and 30.

The Texas Cask is still on the shelves here but the others sound interesting..as would the ambassador casks

Martin was a wonderful host even if he did drag us out in the freezing weather a couple of times!

I received the email with the notes on the HP single casks. Thanks to Avi. His notes are reprinted below:

HIGHLAND PARK SINGLE CASK EXPRESSIONS

Highland Park Texas Lone Star:

Age statement: 14 years old: distilled 1991, bottled 2005

Bottling: cask 2310; approximately 300 bottles

ABV/Proof: 56.7% / 113.4

Barrel aging: American oak, sherry seasoned

Color: bronze amber

Nose: toffee, molasses?

Tasting Notes: light chocolate, toffee springs to action, with a long, lasting finish; very satisfying from beginning to end; OTHER TASTERS mentioned that the whisky felt "bourbony", or had hints of charcoal (would that make it Tennessee-y?)

Highland Park Oklahoma:

Age statement: 27 years old

Bottling: cask 8294

ABV/Proof: 56.1% / 112.2

Barrel: Spanish oak, refill sherry

Color: dark amber

Nose: layered sherry, intricate and wonderful

Tasting Notes: smooth and complex, nice balance of sherry and peat, with a great, lasting finish; OTHER TASTERS mentioned leather

Highland Park Beltramos Wine and Spirits:

Age statement: 14 years old: distilled 1990, bottled 2004

Bottling: cask 1600

ABV/Proof: 46% /92

Barrel: American oak, sherry seasoned

Color: golden

Nose: barely perceptible, closed, with slight hints of buttermilk, perhaps?

Tasting Notes: caramel flavors; however, faint on the palate, even after swishing vigorously in mouth; by far the weakest whisky tasted that night; OTHER TASTERS mentioned floral and grassy flavors

Highland Park Monk's:

Age statement: 27 years old: distilled 1978, bottled 2005

Bottling: cask 6758; approximately 150 bottles

ABV/Proof: 52.7% / 105.4

Barrel: American oak, sherry seasoned

Color: dark amber

Nose: sherry comes on almost too strong, stays in the mind; "spicy Macallan"

Tasting Notes: oak is overwhelmed by the sherry, but some lighter bursts of flavors come through; OTHER TASTERS mentioned citrus notes, banana
