The Speaker Michael Martins Whisky How valuable?

Postby whiteshirt » Wed May 20, 2009 4:06 pm

According to the Daily papers.
Michael Martin's whisky sold out in the Commons gift shop within hours of his resignation yesterday.
By tradition Speakers can select a single malt carrying their name even though Mr Martin is a tee totaller.
I Wonder what the collectors will make of this ?
Apparently The Sun newspaper snapped up the Last bottle

To the best of my knowledge:

The Sun newspaper did not buy the last bottle.

There were still a few left at the shop in Portcullis House (the secure building opposite Parliament where the MP's have their offices).

The last ones were bought on May 20, in the late afternoon, just after 5 o'clock.

Just for clarity, two forms of packaging were made, a beige/white (the original) and a green/white. The green/white was the replacement, intended to make this dob fit in more with the styling of the other Macallan bottles. The biege/white was going to be phased out but the resignation of the speaker meant that the plans were accelerated where all stocks were put up for sale at once, and disappeared very, very fast.

The green/white packages are therefore rarer as they were only on sale for a very, very short time, in very limited quantities, whereas the beige/white had been sold at the commons for years.

Value will only go up from here, as it is a very, very discontinued bottling. For those out there who were able to get their hands on a one, congratulations!

Seems all of the collectors have been outmaneuvred by Macallan.

More bottles, in the green box packaging, have now restocked the shelves the House of Commons shop.

The shelves are full, and there appears to be plenty of stock.

Seems Macallan decided to squeeze in another production run. When the speaker announced his resignation (albeit reluctantly) the shelves emptyed very fast, with no prospect of more. But seems Macallan decided to capitalise on the demand and as if by magic....

Brilliant marketing ploy! It looks like Macallan have leaked his expenses claims, bringing the government to the brink of collapse in the process, and thereby creating a "notoriety halo" around their product to entice collectors into buying. Pure evil genius
