Replying to a slightly old comment I know, but any particular Karuizawa?
I'd like to get my hands on some Hanyu whiskies too, although, yeah, availability isn't one of its strong points. :-\
Wow is that all I wrote, I guess that is simplifying things somewhat.
Karuizawa Noh 1995
Karuizawa Vintage 1971
Karuizawa Rouge Cask SM 1995 Chateau Mercian Reserve
There isn't a problem getting Hanyu malts ,it's just if you want to pay the price for them.
You can though by Ichiro's Malt The Game in Japan for about Y7300 and Ichiro's Pure Malt Double Distilleries for around Y5300. The Later was a 2009 WWA award winner.
I should say that to me most cask strength Yamazaki's/Suntory's are the equal of any Hanyu and a lot better value. Strangely enough, just because it's won a few awards Yamazaki 18 is priced OTT in Japan, same with Hibiki.
Next on my wish/hit list when I return to Japan are,
Yoichi 15/20
Ichiro's Single Malt 20YO
Nikka Taketsura 21
The Yamazaki Single Malt aged 15 years
The aforementioned Ichiro's Double Distilleries
A couple of Owners Cask Suntory CS's
Shot Bar Zoetrope 3rd anniversary SM CS by Ichiro's
