What's your latest bottle opened?

Guess I will start. I just opened a bottle of Milford 10 yrs old. For what I paid for it, its pretty damn nice. Lots of young fruit in this one.

I've opened my whiskybase Laphroaig a few days ago. Depending on what the Mrs. gets my for my Christmas it'll be a HP18 or a Talisker 18. I've had a sample of the 18 last year or so but I've never had the Tali 18 before.

It was a Cadenhead's Caol Ila 13yo from a sherry butt at 60.4%. Yummy! We drank half of it that night.

So what's your most recently opened bottle?

Virginia Gentleman,

Colour: crystal clear.

Nose: pungent corn oil, diesel.

Palate: Thick, oily. Diesel with heating oil notes. Not very subtle.

Finish: Consistent diesel fading quickly to Mazola corn oil. Mild alcohol burn. Oily film seems to persist in the mouth for a long time along with a Mazola taste.

Balance: what?

Glenfiddich 12. This was the first SM I had, and hadn't had it since until tonight.

Pears on the nose, pears, malt, vanilla, and oak on the palate, with a satisfying dry finish. There is something musty/vegetative (mushrooms?) on the nose too, but I'm hoping that will disappear as the bottle opens up.


If money gets tight, I think I could manage quite well with just GF12, Laphroaig 10, and HP 12 for some time.

Caol Ila 18 Year Old... I popped this one to include a proportion of it in an 'older malt whisky' blend I was concocting.

Prior to that, Benriach 15 Year Old Tawny Port Finish... I'm really enjoying each and every one of the Benriachs I've recently opened.

Ardbeg 10 - that got downed in 2 hours so I had to open a Fiddich 15yr to ease the wallet when feeding the masses.

That sounds interesting Doug. Any notes on it?

Not 100% certain which of the above you're referring to, Nick, so let's 'have a go' at both...

First up, my blend:

Brora 1982 Rare Malts Selection 20 Year Old (100ml), Convalmore 1977 Limited Edition 28 Year Old (80ml), Dallas Dhu 1982 Limited edition 24 Year Old (50ml), Caol Ila 18 Year Old (30ml), Glen Mhor 1976 William Cadenhead 20 Year Old (30ml), Talisker 18 Year Old (20ml), Port Ellen 1982 Old Malt Cask 25 Year Old Sherry Butt (10ml), Talisker 25 Year Old Bottled 2007 (10ml)

This one clocks in at 54%ABV. The initial sensation is of tremendous sweetness, likely due to a combination of high alcohol, the incredible malt-fruit surge provided by the 1982 Brora and 1977 Convalmore, and the Sherry wood influence from the Dallas Dhu and Port Ellen. Then, herbal, smoky and seashore aspects begin to creep into the picture, these surely being contributed by the influence of the Glen Mhor (an excellent 'bridge' malt in the context of this particular melding of whiskies), Caol Ila and Talisker as well as the aforementioned Port Ellen.

As far as I'm concerned, this 'experimental' exercise just goes to show that it's not necessarily about how many malts one is incorporating in a blend, but rather about the inherent quality of those malts and how well they complement one another.

In this case, yummers!

The Benriach?

A whisky just made to be poured alongside shortbread or fruit pie.

Well I'll be Drammed! Finished my G15 last week after most of it went in one evening vocal session, and the latest opened is...Ardbeg 10!

Just opened a Laphroaig QC. All in the interests of science - just re-reviewing it as a candidate for the warming dram for my Christmas tasting on Saturday

C57: QC is one of my favorites. Fruity, smoky, fresh, sea, hay, always a nice opener.


I just opened a Nadurra. I'm getting over a cold and need a sweet CS for my lazy tastebuds.

Last bottle opened: Highland Park 18, still does the trick.

Just opened a Bunnahabhain 26yo 1980 Malt Trust

Prior to that (several weeks ago) was a Caol Ila 11yo 1996 Signatory Cask Strength (a Binny's hand-picked cask)

The last bottles I opened were Glenmorangie Astar and SMWS 29.78, both on the same night, approx. 2 months ago.

The Glenmo is nice, but not extraordinary IMO. Cask #29.78 is an 8yo Laphroaig from a refill hogshead, it's very medicinal and peaty, exactly what I expect from a young Laphroaig.

Last night I popped the corkt of my ANB 1990. I think the last bottle I had was early last year. It has a nice softly peated and smokey, yet fruity kind of flavour. I like it better than the last time I had a dram of it.
