Best of Town - US

Would anyone else find it valuable to collect the best places to go for scotch in your local town (or other towns you know well)?

We can post bars, stores, etc that are worth visiting when you are on the road.

I think it might make sense to break these up by country. I will start the US one and I will let others start one for UK and any others that make sense.

Austin, Texas

Best Place To Drink:

Opal Divines - 3 locations in town
- best selection of scotch by the glass
- several flights available to explore various distilleries or regions
- Michael Parker (owner), great guy and scotch nut (like me), hosts Whisky Fest each year in December

Best Shops to Purchase:

Beverage World - I35 and Oltorf
- a real hidden gem amongst the bigger store names
- great selection, including some higher end bottles (Port Ellen 8th release, JW Blue crystal, Brora 30)
- 10% off with the purchase of any 2 bottles (makes their prices real competitive with the bigger guys in town)
- tastings in the shop every Thursday
- willing to special order what you are looking for
- Rohit, Eric, and Bart are a great bunch of guys!

Specs - Brodie Lane
- best selection amongst the Specs stores
- good selection of high end bottles

Specs - Arbor Walk
- good selection of IBs (independent bottling)

Twin Liquors - Hill Country Galleria + various others in town
- some hidden gems in their various stores
- Hill Country store has a huge selection (some from 2222/Koenig store)
- have the hard to find Cadenhead bottles that are no longer imported to the US

I think this is a great idea. Unfortunately, here in NH the state runs the liquor industry. So, there's basically only one inventory. Some locations carry a slightly larger selection, but it doesn't vary much/any from other stores in that same class. Plus, you can get bottles transferred from a bigger store to a smaller, local store at no expense.

Would be nice to know what shops to hit when traveling, though. Could save a lot of time and effort. There are about a dozen liquor stores in close proximity to my in-laws in NY. Only 2 are any good, and only 1 has changing stock. Took me several hours and miles to figure that out.

Northern Clinton County, NY
Dames Discount Wine & Liquor
(518) 561-4660
457 State Route 3
Plattsburgh, NY 12901

Nephew's Discount Wine and Liquor
Price Chopper Plaza (RTs 9 & 11)
Champlain, NY 12919
