Open Whisky Bottles

Hello all,

Being a complete newbie with Whisky and recently decided to turn dedicated 'collector / drink later', I wanted to ask the following question that is bothering me a little.

If I was to open a whisky today, cork it and put it back in the cabinet, how long would that whisky last before losing its punch.

Ive seen some people say that they have had whisky open for 2-3 years without finishing. But does the whisky lose a little by being open this long?

I apologise for a complete novice question but I cant find an answer on this.

Also, would be interested to know what was the longest period of time other members on this forum have had open bottles.

If you poke around, there are a couple of threads that will discuss this issue.

I'd suggest that there are some factors that affect the life of the bottle after opening.

1. How did you store it?
2. Did you open it often?
3. How long has the bottle fill been down near the bottom?

For the record, I've had bottles open for 6 or 7 years and then had respected people comment how good the whiskies were.
