Last night I had a nice Mortlach 15 (G&M) and a very interesting and pleasant single cask Aberlour 15 at a restaurant in Dufftown.

A little catching up from Saturday night. S'tan and Ganga style.

McCarthy's of Oregon 3 yo
42.5%, Batch W0801
Courtesy of Ryguy

We found it to be oily, with a soft peat and some smoke.

Longmorn 15 yo, 45%
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: apricots and peaches, wisp of smoke, non-distinctive citrus
P: dried apricots, slight spice with a drying finish

Longmorn 38, 51%
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: wood spices, herbal spices, fruity-apricot/peach, woody
P: cooked oranges, spices

Mortlach 13 yo, 58.9%, G&M
N: doughy, waxy, creamy
P: doughy, light spice, wax
Note: water leaves only the dough on the nose and the palate goes to a cinnamon dough

Glen Grant 17, 53.9%
SMWS 9.35
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: malty, spiced wood-cedar, leathery, fruity
P: orange honey, woody

Macallan 16, 57.4%,
SMWS 24.96
Courtesy Ryguy
N: orangey-caramel, slight sulfur, nutty, hint of varnish
P: caramel, burnt matches, very Macallan

Highland Park 24, Signatory
N: peaty, lemons, herbs, sandalwood
P: herbal, peaty, anise, citrus, wax

More to follow.

Highland Park 20, 50.5%
SMWS 4.120
Courtesy Ryguy
N: wee hint of peat, lemony, ripe grain on the stalk, wax
P: cracked grains-derum wheat, peat

Brora 24, 60.1%
Signatory
Courtesy Randall Fairbrook
vestige of peat, lemony, bees wax, Clynelishy (S'tan didn't get told what it was)

A little experiment follows.

Glenfarclas 11, 46%, Traversos
Bowmore 12, OB
Glenfarclas 11 again

This is actually a good combination of the two whiskies. The sweet nature of the Farc brings out the smoke of the Bow while the Bow emphasizes the sweetness of the Farc.

Arran NAS, Founders Reserve (for Shareholders)
N: sweet malt and light citrus
P: malt-partly ground, swwet, fruity

And the asault on Islay was on.

(the star of the night)

Bruichladdich 1986, Whiskyship Valinch
Courtesy of Sherried Malt
N: vanilla, cocoanut, wood spices over the top
P: malt, wood-oak, cocoanut, spiced fruits

A good beverage that suffers from following the 1970.

Bruichladdich 21, 43%, mid 90s bottling
virtually the same notes as above. 1970-lite.

Bunnahabhain 18, 43%
N: burnt bread-charred crust, vanilla, fruit compote
P: woody, doughy, cooked fruit

Bowmore 10, 55.6%,
SMWS 3.137

N: heathery, smokey, malty
P: smoke, malt, heather

Bowmore 17, 43%, late 90s bottling
N: lavendar and smoke
P: lavendar and smoke

Bowmore 1984, 58.8%
N: floral, light smoke
P: floral, light smoke, malt

Bowmore Claret
no notes, just says "It was good."

Coal Ila 15, 54.5%
SMWS 53.109
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: oily, chocolate
P: oily-creosote, tarry, malt, dark chocolate

Coal Ila 21, 58.1, 1976
Adelphi
N: malty, oily, olives
P: sour malt, oily, chocolate

Port Ellen 25, 50%
OMC
Courtesy of Sherried Malt
N: lemon, light wood, light pepper?
P: oily, smokey, peaty, lemon

Lagavulin 12, 56.4%
7th release
N: vanilla, smoke, peat
P: peat, smoke, rich maltiness, vanilla

And yet, more Islay was still to be conquered but first an interruption.

Well, we interrupted the siege of Islay to visit Glen Garioch.

Glen Garioch 10, 43%
Circa 1970
N: herbal, smokey
P: rich spices, licorice, caramel
This shoud never be confused with the current release of GG 10. To quote my compatriot, "This is what Glen Garioch should be."

Onwards to Islay

Port Ellen 11, 1983, 43%
Corsini-Verona bottling
N: very ripe malt, lemon and other citrus
P: malty, lemony, peat smoke

Laphroaig 17, 59.1%
SMWS 29.60
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: Oily, malty
P: malty, oily, jalapenos (very strange)

Laphroaig 18, 56.4%
SMWS 29.64
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: candied malt, peat
P: oily, peaty, malt, chocolate and caramel

Ardbeg Oogie 54.2%
N: creosote, dark fruits, overlying smoke
P: oily-creosote, chocolate

Ardbeg Beist 16, 46%
Notes were really short: Woohoo!!!

Ardbeg 9, 58.0%
SMWS 33.66
Courtesy of Ryguy
N: mango, smoke, peat
P: creosote, dark chocolate, smokey peat

Ardbeg Renaissance, 55.9%
N: creosote oil, chocolate, malt
P: charred creosote, roasted malt, peat smoke
Let me tell you how much this one sucks. :D

To finish off the evening a couple of bourbons: George T Stagg and Michters 10 yo.

All in all, a very pleasant evening. I'd like to thank Ryguy, Sherried Malt and MikeyMad for some of the whisky sampled and also S'tan for playing my host.

Had some BNJ last night ..... must say not bad. A fairly decent blend and great value. Sligtly on te light side but grand for some to drink while your thinking about what to drink next

Then cracked open my new lap 15yo ...... First tasting of this and I must admit I was impressed. Heaps of aroma and flavours but the smoke and peat is not as evident in it's younger brothers. Not quite up there with Lagavulin 16 in comparison either. Jim Murry slates it but I've noticed he has the same note in the bible from 2004 to 2007 (I've not got the 2008 to hand at the mo). Surely there could be a change since then .....

Of course I never had it in the past so I've nothing to compare it to but must admit I enjoyed it last night.

I would will it stand up to a comparison with Laga 16yo ... that is my next quest.

Was invited to a tasting by Mr Van Zuylen. The location was an old medieval church in Den Haag. I asked around but don't think there were any WM forum members.

Just a small precision...
This tasting, called "Whisky in the Church" was in fact an annual meeting of the forum of whisky-distilleries.info... This does not change very much to the facts, but i think it is worth to be noticed (as being a co-organisator of the event...).
I found this topic by searching simply "Feral Clang" on Google.
I would like to draw your attention on the fact that the distillery where this (excellent) malt is coming from does not like their name to be associated to this bottle.
I just received a threatening mail from this distillery that cannot be named, saying that, if I do not remove any reference to that Ballindalloch distillery associated to the names Feral Clangs or Lancers Flag from my (purely informational...) site, they will start legal proceedings.
I guess it is important that everybody in the world of whisky lovers knows about that.
I am really furious...!

interesting past few nights:
3 ago: BenRiach 12 v. Balvenie 10 FR
The first impression I got was that the Balvenie was a bit stronger than the BenRiach (in color, flavor, and smell). but both good speysiders

2 ago: Laphroaig QC and Macallan 12

1 ago: Speyside

tonight: Talisker 10, Glenkinchie (year?)

While chatting with Willie (way too late his time) I finished off about 30cl of:

Bowmore 14yo 1990 ( 43%, D&M, 4.90-8.04 Connoisseurs' Club )

Very good bourbon aged Bowmore, nice malt and smoke.

Cheers,

I tried the Highland Park 15 years old for the first time last night.

Of the standard releases I have previously had the 12, 16, 18, 21 and 25 years old. I found the 15 years old much better then the 16 years old. Quite much honey in this one, and I liked it!

Okay maybe it was only about 275ml... :-)

I know that when I hang bottles. Image Image I can go through a lot of beverage. There was a period that I was hanging two bottles a week :dead: :dead: . I had to stop that, it started to cause issues. :o

I have finished a bottle in a day. And there probably have been a couple of cases that I have had the amount of a bottle in a session. I know that ganga and I hung a bottle of 'morangie 10yo, and it was gone in hours (if that). I can drink a lot, but I don't drink a lot (often)...

Following Mikey's thoughts, the Glenmo was opened about 8 PM and I don't think it made 10 PM but whisky pong does that.

I also did a bottle of the Dalmore Cigar Malt in a New Year's afternoon...and I was looking for more.

Hello Mr Putz, nice to see you found this forum.
I'm sorry I didn't put your name and the name of the tasting in my post.
Compliments for your fantastic site, http://www.whisky-distilleries.info .
Lots of info on very many distilleries and great tasting notes. Like them so much because you make several notes per whisky.

Scapa 14 that I just opened. I hadn't tried it before but it struck me as a good choice for a hot summer night. It was indeed a good choice.

Finished with more of the Ardbeg 10. It keeps going and going and... soon it will be gone :(
