verdict is.... i want more japanese whisky!

my favorites were the hakushu 20 and the hanyu king of hearts. the barrel samples were quite interesting too. the 3 of them at different percentages (80/10/10) made up the yama 12 and 18.

Big Malky came round on Monday. 5 bottles emptied, many bottles severely depleted, 3 bottles opened and many samples drunk.

You can't beat a good night in. :D

Sounds good. I don't think that I have ever had an old (20+) single grain. How was it?

Had a Dimple Pinch for the first time last night. Very enjoyable, great texture with nice spice. One of the better scotch blends I've had.

Snow Phx...Well, I have to say that it was better from a bottle that had been open for awhile. This may be something to consider when contemplating a purchase.

Bowmore Mariner, much better than I recall, a really complex and sophisticated dram.

Dallas Dhu, 10 Yr, G&M. Found it in a store in New Jersey, $45. I've only had 20+ year drams of Dallas Dhu, from various independent bottlers, given the distillery was closed 38 years ago. G&M tells me this was exported to the U.S. between 1993-95. Anyway, I bought it and found it incredibly enjoyable. Very balanced on nose, palate and finish, quite malty and finishes quite dry with subtle smoke and sea salt. Very nice dram, and a real bummer they'll never produce again.

Chivas 12YO. What can I tell you? I was attending a wedding reception, and the selection of liquors at the bar was... well... rather limited. Wine was tasty, though.

Arran 1998 Single Bourbon Cask followed by Douglas Laing's Big Peat. I've really enjoyed the Big Peat (and have a spare bottle in the cabinet for that very reason). It's quite amazing how that little bit of extra-matured Port Ellen in the mix helps to smooth out and bring all of the other elements together. Well done!

Crown Royal Special Reserve last night... Just sooooooo smooth. But I still feel it's eclipsed by the less expensive Limited Edition and the more expensive Cask No. 16.

That North British is pretty interesting, Sean. Would never guess the age given its liveliness. Quite grainy-fruity with very faint touches of acetone and burnt matches. I'm certainly going to take my time with this one, as it may well improve now that the bottle's broached.
