Robertson Winery 2009 Number One Constitution Road Shiraz (a surprisingly velvety and approachable wine despite its 15%ABV 'heftiness') with grilled steaks, followed by Rock Hill Farms Single Barrel Bourbon.

Last night I drank far too much, it's not big and it's not clever but it did seem like a good idea at the time - it was the Springbank open day after all. Cadenheads will be bottling an outstanding Dallas Dhu 1979 soonly which may go some way to cancelling out the Dad dancing I got up to in the Feathers - but if your going to play Lynard Skynard I will not be responsible for the consequences.

I believe I am about to have one of the longest posts here.
So ive just returned from a whisky tasting event.

I have had a few nice drams before. I started drinking just two years ago, not just whisky but alcohol and settled on a single malt whisky journey. The rest, imho, is cr@p.

So this tasting, my first, was EPIC

I had:-

Ardmore
Glenfiddich, 14yo, 15yo and 21yo
Macallan 12 yo
Balvenie 21 yo
Glenlivet 18 yo
Bunnahabain 12yo, 15 yo
Dalmore cigar
Jura 16 yo
Ardbeg 10yo
Lagavulin 16yo

And by FAR the winner for me is what I started with : Lagavulin 16 yo. I had 6 drams of this throughout the 2hrs I spent "tasting". While I was definitely tipsy, im typing this just 4.5 hours after I had my first dram. Ofcourse, was driven home - responsible and all that.it doesnt matter what it costs, I am getting a Laga 16yo tomorrow.
What a night.

#EPIC

Oh, and I drink only neat. No ice or "drop of water", to open up these "bouquets". Im not there to smell the thing - whilst i can appreciate different scents. Im there to taste it. I consider it crazy to mix something that has taken 10 to 2x years to make.

As you further your exploration, you may change the view on adding water. For the most part, the bottles you were trying are not worth adding water but when you start getting cask strength whiskies you might find that water is appropriate. I've had many whiskies north of 60%

Im sure I would if one could actually find cask strength varieties here in South Africa. :headbang:
Looking forward to sampling those. Maybe the next whisky live event towards the latter part of the year will have that variety.

I went out and got myself some Nadurra @ 56.9% which I understand is how they bottle all of their Nadurra.
Nice, tasty. Suppose its different from the Lag 16, Caola Ila that I got as well. Havent opened them up yet.

AND YES, I put about 3 drops of water in each dram after my mouth felt the burn (though after a hot/pungent chilli meal  ). will try on its own to see if I really need water next time.

I did a taste off between Widmer Drifter Pale Ale and it's replacement Widmer Alchemy Pale Ale. Drifter's kicked it's butt.

Like it a lot...

Positives:
1. Higher than standard bottling strength (a major plus)
2. Added textural richness
3. Mid teens degree of maturity (well judged)
4. Enhancement of caramel-toffee (naturally wood extracted) overtones

Only possible downside:
1. Perhaps a slightly lower degree of overall complexity compared to its 15YO and 18YO stablemates, which really doesn't bother me too much given the positives

Last night...

Balvenie 14YO Caribbean Cask (honey and spice dessert whisky par excellence)
Isle of Jura 16 Year Old (satiny smooth and a little to the sweet side for an island malt)
Ledaig 10 Year Old (a lemon-saturated salt'n'smoke whisky that's superbly appetizing
