Friday night was beer night. We had a Christmas Ale, the Kaweah brown ale, Little White Lie and one other. Only the White Lie was better than just good.

Maker's Mark... Better at the halfway point of the bottle than right off the top.

After the whisky in the morning, a few beers in the evening.

Last night I did a tasting at the request of a friend. For his birthday he requested that I educate his friends on whisky. Therefore I went through a collection of whisky to highlight different styles and ages for whisky. These included:

Speyburn Bradan Orach
Haig Single Grain
Bushmill's Black Bush
Four Roses bourbon
Aberlour A'bunadh, batch 50
Hepburn's Choice Craigellachie 18
Laphroaig Cairdaes
Lagavulin 16

In addition, we started with 20 minutes on nosing. I brought out 2 glencairns, rocks, whisky specialty glass and a snifter. All 5 had the Speyburn. All were bottle strength except for the second glencairn which had water added. It was very interesting because they initially were quite shocked at how different they smelled. Everyone had a difference of opinion as to what they preferred. Much fun was had by all.

I'd mentioned in another thread that I'd been to a tasting (which was a fund raiser for Parkinsons' Disease). For a donation of $100.00 you got a number (18) of drams, some lunch and lots of socialisation over said drams.
The tasting involved;
Breize from Breton, France, blah. Sadly I own one.
Bains , South Africa, tasted like a decent bourbon to me.
Macmyra 08, Sweden, indifferent dram ... okay I called it "something unpleasant" in public, out loud.
Rittenhouse, USA - couldn't drink it, dumped it in the spittoon.
Elijah Craig USA - another one I couldn't get past my nose, ended up in spittoon too.
Crown Royal Northern Harvest - over rated not great not one of the Worlds' best by any stretch. I own two. (sigh!)
Forty Creek Canada, not bad at all, better than the Crown Royal NH albeit with a short finish, typical enjoyable Canadian rye
Bushmills Ireland, a decent dram to enjoy, but not spectacular. For that I'd go with a Powers.
Redbreast Ireland, which earned my most damning comment "indifferent at best"
Tyrconnel Ireland, an enjoyable dram which I am glad I own.
Glenfarclas 15, a nice SM medium finish which is also owned.
Glenfarclas 17, another winner medium finish, got one.
Balvenie Caribbean Cask, all good, nice medium finish, got one.
Kilchoman Machir Bay, probably the best of the evening. For my money you can't go wrong with a Kilchoman. Wish I owned one.
Laphroaig 17, another winner for me which I had just purchased the day before.
Hazel burn 12, not bad at all, another got one.
Longrow 12, again a very decent dram, again owned.
Springbank 18, was my second favourite dram of the evening. Sadly don't own yet...

There were too many drams from "away" for my liking and some that should never see the light of day in my honest opinion. I would have preferred less. Don't get me wrong, I have tried American Bourbon, Macmyra whisky and some exceptional Irish whisky, so I don't dislike them. I merely feel that there was too much spread in the whiskies offered and that it should have tightened up to fewer whiskies from only a couple of countries. I will probably just make a donation next year.

Rittenhouse rye is a decent rye. Nothing to get excited about. It's been too many years since I've tried some of these and not sure they represent the same thing anymore.
