At WhiskyFest NY last night:

Glenlivet 1972 Cellar Collection - elegant

Balvenie Vintage 1976 - mouth wateringly good

D&T Glen Grant 1970 35yr - ditto

D&T Linlithgow 1982 21yr - very sweet and nice

HP 25 - fantastic

HP 18 - ditto

Then a Heaven Hill seminar with Parker Beam discussing the age limit on bourbon:

Elijah Craig 18yr - very smooth sweet and yummy

Parkers Heritage 27 yr - leathery, spicy, obvious rye influence

A 30yr sample from the 3rd floor of the rickhouse (barrel proof 119)
- sweet, bold oak, spicy

A 30yr sample from the 7rd floor of the rickhouse (barrel proof 170)
- this last sample was meant to show what over-aging will do to a bourbon - it was all acetone and cleanser.

Then back to the main room:
Balvenie 17 Rum - the first Rum-finished whisky I've tasted. I don't think this is for me.

D&T Tamdhu 34 yr. - suprisingly light color and taste, like it wasn't even there.

D&T Glen Elgin 1991 16yr - strong over-ripe fruit, too much so for my taste

Glenfarclas 21 - nice as expected

Ardbeg Beist - just needed some Ardbeg

Scapa 14 - a nice bit of sea air, somewhat plain.

A couple new Goose Island beers - the Matilda and Pere Jacques were really good. The Bourbon County Stout wasn't my cuppa. But it was the last drink of the night so I'll withhold judgment for the future.

Then I gave up, stuffed my face from the buffet and went home. A thoroughly enjoyable evening.

And, since they didn't have the 15 Year Old Dark Rum Finish as planned, we were treated to a replacement-

Batch 4 - Bottled Aug 2007 -
1976, aged 30YO, cask 4469, Port pipe, richly peated / Port finish, bottle 17 of 769, 55.5%ABV

By far, the single cask strength bottle was the best on the nose and palate, followed by the unpeated 20 yo, followed by the 15 wood finish. It was very strange to taste the heavily peated whiskys without getting any medicinal or salty notes!

It was fun getting back home...

I've become a big fan of BenRiach, LSD

The sample was from 2007 at 40.5%. Might keep the sample bottle as the smell is very addictive, hangs about your nose for ages!

The Talisker was fantastic also!

Not last night but Friday. Weekends are too busy with a young child to spend time online.

SMWS, Queen Street - 78.39. Think this is a "Love it or hate it" dram and I am in the latter camp. So sour it is almost undrinkable at full strength. Water tamed it a bit and brought out some fruit and spice but the balsamic vinegar/soy sauce notes are far too prevalent. BTW how are these notes imparted to a whisky?

Back home went through a few of my SMWS bottlings - 85.19, 76.56, 13 something, and rounded off by the best of the bunch a'Bunadh 22.

I opened a bottle of tequila that we bought in Mexico last year. This one is 100% blue agave. Very smooth. It has that unique agave aftertaste which to me taste like grass. But I do like it. Afterwards, a dram of #21 A'bunadh.

Last Saturday I opened a bottle of tequila that we bought after touring the distillery in Mexico. I dont have the name of the bottle but its 100% blue agave which is suppose to be the best tequila you can have. This one is golden color in a square bottle. The taste is very smooth. I taste a grassy aftertaste which I think is the agave. Its better being sip a little bit at a time.

And followed it with a dram of #21 A'bunadh.
