Hello all:

Monday, the 9th, was a quieter dramming night: Hirsch Selection 13 yr rye (an older J. Van Winkle Lawrenceburg, KY bottling Lot 97-1) which was deliciously sublime, a MMcD 1991 Springbank 8 yr, an Ellenstown 10 yr, and finished with a wee dram of SMWS #114.3. All good...
Tuesday, the 10th, was a dry night.

Slainte!

Hello all:

Wednesday, the 11th, drams were: Nikka Yoichi 10 yr @45%, Arran Founder's Reserve NAS (this bottling showed to me the promise of Arran malt having excellent potential), Deerstalker (Balmenach) 12 yr (this has gotten really "tasty" at 1/4 bottle remaining), and Cooper's Choice Glendullan 17 yr (very pleasantly fruity). Small pours of each...

Hello all:

Well, finally I'm catching up for posting the past week's drams. Last night, at Ganga's suggestion, I poured some bourbons first: Yellowstone 6 yr @43% (bottled '75), Buffalo Trace ('07 bottling), Old Taylor BIB (100 pf) (bottled '72), Beam's Black Label 101 months old @90 pf (bottled '88), Old Forester BIB (100 pf) (distilled Spring '65, bottled Spring '70), Wild Turkey 10 yr 101 pf "Russell's Reserve", Wild Turkey 8 yr 101 pf (bottled '80), Old Fitzgerald's 1849 8 yr @90 pf (possible S-W distillate, but more likely Bernheim), and Old Fitzgerald BIB (100 pf) (bottled '83). Very good bourbons all. If only the contemporary standard bottlings were so good as their older brethren.

Couldn't resist moving over to malts to finish off the PLOWED session. Again went with the TWE bottlings: Lp1, CI1, Ar1, and SMOS Ardbeg 8 yr. I think I got 'em all... A couple "repeats", too...

Oban 14
Talikser 10
Glenmorangie 10
A five year old who's name alludes me, and have no real need to recall.

5 SMWS drams but I didn't mark the Cask #s

But there was a Glenthrothes and a nice one at that.
A Glenmorangie.
A claytons Ardbeg, the Ardbeg you have when your not having and Ardbeg.( picked it for a Bowmore or maybe Bruichladdich)
An actual Bowmore.
A Benrinnes, which was my pick of that particular crop.

Nothing outstanding enough to purchase.

A new home vatting, which I created as a 'mystery malt' for an upcoming tasting, consisting of varying proportions of:

Aberlour 16 Year Old Double Cask Matured
Bowmore 16 Year Old Limited Edition Sherry Matured Cask Strength, Distilled 1990
Brora 20 Year Old Rare Malts Selection Cask Strength, Distilled 1982
Caol Ila 18 Year Old
Convalmore 28 Year Old Cask Strength, Distilled 1977 & Bottled 2005
Glengoyne 17 Year Old
Glenlivet 16 Year Old Nàdurra Cask Strength, Batch No. 0808F, Bottled August 2008
Glen Mhor 20 Year Old Cask Strength, William Cadenhead, Distilled 1976 & Bottled 1997
Highland Park 18 Year Old
Imperial, Gordon & Macphail, Distilled 1979 & Bottled 1997
Longmorn 16 Year Old
Oban Distillers Edition Montilla Fino Cask Wood, Distilled 1983 & Bottled 2000
Talisker 18 Year Old

A melding of 13 single malts blended on Friday the 13th of March.
Auspicious, no?

Very crisp, well delineated presence, with the maturity of the whiskies becoming increasingly apparent toward the finish. A lot going on, too, with subtle input from the coastal/island and Sherry elements percolating through the core malt and oak flavours from moment to moment. The sweetness is relatively restrained, and there's a lovely fresh mint quality that has the effect of cleansing the palate and making one want another sip.

Was out in the "Toon" for a meal last night and had.....
12yo Yamazaki
15yo Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserve Bourbon
20yo Pappy Van Winkles Family Reserve Bourbon

Really like the 12yo Yam , can't wait to try the supposedly better 18yo .
The two PVW were really nice but preferred the younger one as the 20yo was starting to push it wood wise .

I went looking for a new everyday scotch and bought a bottle of Grant's.

I don't like it. Nose: candied apricot and...mushroom? Alcohol sensation dominates in the mouth, very brash. Very long astringent finish. Bizarre.

This is probably a scotch best left for mixing.

My previous everyday whiskies have been Crown Royal and Ballantine's. Either of these beat the Grant's easily.

Yes I would. It is one of the best Bowmores I've had.

Far better than most (especially later bottlings) of the no-age-statement Darkest editions, I find. But you have to like that pronounced Sherry cask overlay of flavour for this one to work for you.

I tried that bad blended scotch from Grant's again.

I usually drink single malts in a brandy snifter, undiluted. The first time I had the Grant's, I drank it this way and it was awful. Last night, I tried it on the rocks and it was OK. Not great, just OK.

I can drink the Grant's now! :D I won't have to use it as a degreaser for my car now!
