Thought a thread giving heads up on supermarket special offers might be handy.

Morrison's:
Ardbeg 10yo £16.99 !!
Ledaig Peated £12.99

Sainsbury's:
Pure Islay £12.99 - this stuff is very good.

Wow! The Ardbeg price is roughly the equivalent of AUS$40.

The retail price over here is closer to $70 !!!

Not only can you get Ardbeg Ten for such a ridiculous low price but you also have supermarkets!
Well, we've got the latter ones but the Ten costs 40,7 GBP in Norway.

I know it's 1,3 on the JWB scale but still......

I got the price off http://www.tesco.com/pricecheck/ - which is what I usually use to check whicky prices - so no I'm not sure ! Let us know the price.

BTW - I tried to register for your forum last Wed, but did not get an email

I ride a BMW C1 scooter (the funny ones with a roof), so petrol is not such an issue - more the constant abuse I receive, whilst riding

Furhter more the 'Rocks' that have been selling fro £40 can be purchased for £25 at morrision. their whisky selection is excellent

It is a great selection. I think we're really lucky with the supermarket stuff generally. You can pick a bottle with your eyes closed and you will get good reasonably priced whisky.

Except JB white label - yuk.

indeed, I almost agree with the exception of Ledaig Peated £12.99 - Put it down after my fisrt sip, nearly threw it away, and I'll drink anything.

Not felt like that since drinking campari!

Heh heh - I love Campari !! but have not tried that particluar Ledaig. At that price, the supermarket own bottlings are my first choice.

Ledaig does not seem to have many fans. Not sure what their stategy is.
I don't altogether agree with supermarket deals. Whilst it is always good to get high quality produce such as Ardbeg at such a riculous price, in the ling term, what does this do for the humble distiller. Will the supermakets squeeze them until they start to cut costs until they close or are swallowed up by multinationals?
What profit is poured back into the distillery?
Supermarkets are good at cashing in on popular trends and bleeding producers dry.
With the current increasing popularity of whisky, let's hope they don't do to whisky as they do to milk, veg, chickens, etc :cry:

I'd be interested to hear the margins made on whisky. I wonder how much the retailer gets?

On the topic of supermarkets, here in Alberta, supermarkets can sell liqour but only in a stand alone building on the same piece of land.
One outlet, The Real Canadian Superstore, only inventories 30 or so single malts but sells them for approx. 20 % less than normal retailers.

Yes, Alberta is the land of great prices, I've bought at the Real Canadian Liquor Store and found Springbank 10 for $50 when in BC it was selling for $100.

I've also found Laphroaig 10 for $32 and Aberlour 10 for $28 versus $55 and $45 in BC.

$28 for an Aberlour 10, that's the same price as a decent bottle of wine.

Not quite as low priced as Real Canadian, but there's also a store called Western Cellars that is run by Sobey's. Maybe $2-3/bottle higher than RCLS, but still less than most specialty shops or other general liquor stores, and a bit better selection than Real Canadian. I think Aberlour 10 is about $32 including tax (RCLS shelf price doesn't include 7% gst)

Unfortunately, it's not easy to get a decent bottle of wine in either of them!
