Bamber, have you tried the ASDA Islay malt? Do you know which distillery it's from?

That's one I haven't tried (the Sainsbury's, Safeway's and Tesco's are really good IMO), but I was going to pick up a bottle of that and some Talikser tomorrow, unless my head is turned by the Fiddich 18yo :)

Don't know the distillery.

I saw Glen Bracken single malt 12 yo in Lidl today. I've not heard of that one before. Can't remember the exact price but I think it was in the area of £12-15. Maltmadness site suggests that it's actually Tamnavulin. Does anyone have more info?

It was next to a shelf full of the blend with the trad Scottish name, Queen Margot :)

Ben Bracken, maybe? Murray rates a 12yo at 88, under "Unspecified Speyside".

That'll be it. I must wear my glasses next time I visit...

That's a high score for a "cheapie", I think. JM scores the ob Tamnavulin 12 at 79 in my old edition of the WB.

How's this? One of the supermarket chain liquor stores here (bear in mind that you can't actually buy liquor from a supermarket here in Australia) has an offer of Highland Park 25yo on sale $210.

That's about 5.1 JWB. How does that compare with the local market for any of you English or Scottish folks?

The competitor's supermarket chain store has the same bottling on sale for $450!!! $210 strikes me as being an insanely good deal, but I'd love to know how that compares on the Johnnie Walker Black Price index in other countries, particularly the UK?

(As an aside, they're also selling Highland Park 18yo for $130, whereas it normally retails for $175!)

Cheers,

Sorry, it's not exactly what you were asking for, because I'm living in a non-UK market. But you'll get HP 25 from 4,8 up to 6,0 JWB around here. So your 5,1 sounds interesting´even from my point of view.

Aye, the reading glasses are vital equipment! Otherwise that $35 bargain bottle turns out half the time to be $85 at the cashier.

Reminds me of the chap who had a red weal on the bridge of his nose.

"What happened?" I asked

"It's my glasses," he explained.

"Why don't you try contact lenses," I said.

"Because they don't hold enough beer," he explained.

(quick exit, to avoid catcalls and being pelted with rotten fruit... )

Like whiskies, the old ones aren't necessarily the best ones

Unfortunately, not all Trader Joe's locations sell alcohol -- including the one in my neighborhood!

Arrrgggghhh!

Well, no one sells alcohol in the regrettably dry town of Haddonfield.

Do you suppose anyone does in Lawrenceville, where I will be spending this weekend?

You're coming to Lawrenceville??? It's about two miles from my day job in Princeton, and yes, there are many fine establishments that sell adult beverages...

Just been to Asda where they're selling Auchentoshan Select for just £10.
I didn't get one myself as I had a bottle a while ago and it seemed to last forever, it's not a very interesting dram IMO.
Am I right in thinking this is to be replaced by the 10yr as their cheapy?

Raises an interesting question. If it's a great bargain, but you wouldn't like it, is it still a bargain?

It's not a terrible whisky - quite light and lemony I seem to remember - but not to my taste. That doesn't mean others won't enjoy it especially at the price.
It's not like we're talking about Ledaig NAS

our local (Zetland Wines, Northallerton) does excellent whisky deals - usually as cheap, if not cheaper than tescos

for example, Highland Park £18.99 last month

Would they ship to the UK? Here it seems to be around the £36 mark.

Me mum got me a Lagavulin16 from cash n' carry ...for £18!!!

ok, so you gotta be a member, or have a mum sharp enuff to call you while at the whisky section(or in this case sharp enuff to know how to use a mobile phone at 83...)

However...methinks it was a less than brilliant vintage (compare JM's score of the Lag 16 in '05(88) and '06(95).Lacking a bit of power...but nonetheless a good buy!

Was tempted by a Black Bottle ...for £12 ...in Waitrose! but had to settle for a replacement Aberlour a'bunadh batch 16 for £30...still a bargain in my book!! At 59.6% that's a lot of first class whisky...

Yes, it's Welsh whisky actually, and it's quite sweet and smooth. Because it's a new distillery (opened 2000-ish) it's not very old, but it sure is a very nice dram and i'm sure the 10YO will be crackin' 22 quid is a good price and I dont thing you'll be dissapointed in it. The bottle sure looks nice as well, too bad it doesn't fit my cabinet :)

I would say it's hard to justify £22 for a 5 year old whiskey.
