Re-using Whisky (Borbon) casks

Postby Muskrat Portage » Thu Aug 24, 2006 11:12 pm

I've acquired an empty bourbon cask and am about to pour 5-6 gallons of water into it and then slowly rotate it an inch at a time for a month to draw the whisky out of the wood and into the water. When my late father tried this 10 years ago, he got a fairly palatable beverage out of the process. He actually did it 3 times and called it "Swish"
Has anyone else tried this and was the end result palatable?

Do you know what bourbon was in that barrel?

Certainly there is no alcohol in the end product?

Hey, isn't that how counterfeiting works!
Anyway, should we look forward to one day being able to buy this "leftover whisky??" Heck, if the end product doesn't have alcohol, I'll bet it might be interesting, and maybe a good water to use to add to your whisky, or not.
Let us know what happens! Good luck!

Alcohol levels

Postby Muskrat Portage » Fri Aug 25, 2006 6:32 pm

I'm not sure what the ABV of the end result is but, yes as I seem to remember, there was alcohol leached out of the wood by the water through osmosis. You'd have to drink a fair amount to get a buzz on I would imagine but I'll post what the end result is in about a month.
So, nobody else has tried this? Frodo???

I've never had access to a whisky cask so I've never tried it. Not sure what I'd do if I had one - just so used to buying bottles from the LCBO...
