NEWBIE!!! I'm not spamming, just asking advice

Postby anfield1 » Fri Aug 25, 2006 7:42 pm

I recently received the following word document from a mate who assured me it's all above board, however I've been scammed more times than I'd like to remember and was wondering if any of you have come across this and/or would dismiss it as garbage or worth it for the £6 cost. I mean, they're not asking for thousands and it doesn't reek of pyramid type schemes, but before I go in for it I'd like to hear some advice if thats possible. I am sorry if I've posted this in the wrong section. Thanks for your time. Ryan

I haven't opened your document, but I see a reference to Paypal i nthe title. There has been a Paypal thing going round for some time, which although not an actual pyramid thingy, is something very similar.

Remember, if it seems too good to be true - it probably IS!

Thats a fair enough point mate, and if it hadn't come from a trusted pal I'd have dismissed it straight away but I'm itching to give it a whirl for the sake of £6. If you read through it, it seems genuine enough. Thanks for your reply

Just saying this is not spam doesn't make it so. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but the fact that your first post on a whisky forum is to post this nonsense suggests to me that you're trying to sell it and pretending it's an inocent query.

Welcome to the forum.

Aidan

Thats a fair point mate, and it is naiive of me to think I'd be trusted anyway. I am being genuine though and I will be contributing further on this forum. I've only just joined and although my opening gambit is a bit peculiar, its just what's on my mind right now thats all. I'm as sceptical as you fella, cheers

Hi Ryan

Welcome to the forum, so. I didn't mean to be rude about your post, and I have no say on what goes for the website.

Anyway, personally, I wouldn't go near pyrimad schemes, as someone is always ripped off in the end.

There's a whisky swapping scheme on the website that's far more rewarding...

Regards,
Aidan

Hi Ryan,

Welcome to the forum and I look forward to your future posts about whisky, just out of interest what are you drinking at the moment?

Firstly this isn't really the place to discuss internet scams. There are many forums dedicated to exposing scams. If you are the type of person looking for the quick easy buck then you really should start looking for a specialist forum.

Secondly, and I will apologise if I am shown to be wrong, I think your posts are a way to get other people involved in scams and schemes by suggesting your are going to give it a go. It is sometimes reffered to as 'social engineering' and is the backbone of many 419 scams, forming a relationship with intended targets to gain trust.

I've removed the link to the file and ask you not to distribute this type of content on here.

Anyone else who has read it from here, stay away from it. I haven't even bothered reading, just stay away from it and spend your £6 down the pub on a nice dram. :D

Ryan you are on probation

Aidan, Yes I'm a Liverpool fan and right now I'm drinking water due to an infection and the anti-biotics don't mix (sorry!). The last bottle I had was a present from a good friend (now a very good friend!) which was a Bowmore Islay 12 year malt.

Matt Page, Most of what you said went over my head (the 419 stuff??) to be honest mate. I'm honestly no scammer and the fact you've removed the link really makes no odds to me. I just wanted people to see the document in its original wording rather than me trying to explain it as it would've definitely sounded like a pyramid scheme (as it did the wife when I tried explaining it to her - hence me being alone on the computer right now facing a night on the sofa!!)

Cheers anyway, I will contribute more to the site as and when I get the opportunity.

:D I look forward to it, sounds like you could do with a dram tonight. Got an infection, dodging internet scams, wifes nagging you, forum moderators nagging you, phew... what a night

I'll have one for you, quiet night in with a Glenlivet Archive 21 :)

Great work Matt!
And very professionally handled!
Also, my friend was just in Scotland a few weeks back, and since I'm going Monday, I asked him what the best whisky he tasted was. He told me I must taste the Glenlivet Archive 21!!!
Thanks for the confirmation!
