Just spotted this on the Waitrose wine website:

For a limited period, Compass Box are offering a free 5cl miniature sample bottle of 'The Peat Monster' on request.

They will also send you out a £5 off voucher to use against there case of any 12 bottles. Incidentally there Aberlour A'bunadh is only £25 per bottle just now.

Does anyone know what regions it includes? I'm in the Netherlands over here and that'd probably mean them paying more for shipping and whatnot.

Guess I can always give it a try and then report back if they send an email stating it isn't possible.

Waitrose only deliver to the UK so i would guess this offer is only aimed at UK residents. It does no harm to send your name and address though as i would guess it is Compass Box who are dispatching the free dram.

Gonna give it a try too, as Norwegian customs will allow 5cl bottles to enter. They must figure it's not really full of whisky, but more of a collectable thing, like those huge bottles of alcohol aren't really full of anything more than colored water, and just meant for display purposes!

I got a sample of a compass box from malts and more in germany when i ordered a couple form them, it was extremely smokey, is the one on offer similar is so far as the smoke is concerned?

The Peat Monster is a beautifully smoked whisky, very good indeed! Had a bit of it with a friend when we visited New York in September, great stuff!

Got an email from the kind gregg in Compas Box.... He was letting me know that the offer was not available outside the UK however as I was a fellow celt he'd make an exception for me

Great so there is a mini winging it's way to me as we speak

Can't wait the spice tree was an enjoyable experience so I hope this is just as flavoursome with of course a smidgeon of peat :wink:

Got my sample Tuesday. surprisingly good.

Taste and colour actually reminiscent of Ardbeg 10...so tried the 2 back to back. Definite differences then became apparent. The Ardbeg "arrival" is kinda incomparable, harder(in a good way)and the finish slightly sweeter.

But hey. That's a pretty good comparison/recommendation. And Waitrose don't charge a hill o' beans for it. I think I saw it at £19 recently...

I gather it's a blend of Caol Ila and Ardmore.

Thanks for the comparison RB I'm looking forward to it. I'll compare it to te Caol Ila Cask strength and Ardbeg Nearly there than I have at te moment. They are probably the closest malts by what your saying and I'll be able to make a definitive judgement on whether it is good or so so.

Mine also arrived Tuesday, only just got around to tasting it tonight. A very nice dram, i would agree with Reggaeblues comparison to Ardbeg 10.

Reggaeblues i think it is a blend of Caol Ila 10 year old and Ardmore 15 year old. Well worth the £19 price tag Waitrose has on it.

Isn't the Peat monster equal parts Coal Ila and Ardmore.

Would be very interesting to stack it against a Caol Ila and see if you can recognise the distillery taste, and whether the casks selected have a similar profile. Also does the Ardmore add a pleasant sweetness/completeness to the whole thing, or does the highland simply quench some of the islay fire?

Personally whilst I like the Peat Monster, it's a good drinkable whisky, to me it's a misnomer, and perhaps Peat Teddy would have been a more apt name.

I think it is a vatting of about four malts but I'm not certain.

I had some Peat Monster when it was first released and it was very peaty and very smooth at the same time. It is quite possible that the ages of the malts and the composition of the blend/vat has changed for subsequent editions.

Well would you believe it mine arrived today ... delighted that it came so quickly

but I can't taste it until after I'm off duty and that won't be till 4am .... so looks I'll probably wait till tomorrow

Nosed it though ... but just from the bottle ...

Thick sweet with some fruitiness but plenty of toasty smokiness.

Smells promising ... hope the taste is as good as the nose...
