it is £61.99 in the Edinburgh duty free shop, says right along the box its only for travelling customers, exclusive to world duty free

Right you are. When my buddy delivered the bottle, he said, "Why don't we say $120 and we'll call it even?" A discount and hand delivery... You can't beat that! :D

How much does $120 work out at these days??

£61.99 seemed a fair price to me. I didnt but one this time round but im in the airport quite often so might pick one up on next trip. If i buy a couple, i dont mind getting those who want one a bottle whilst im there, dont think there is a limit on how many i can buy if i get them put aside and collect on return.

If anyone wants one, and has Ardbeg they would like to trade do get in touch

Cheers

Yes, but we all know that ordinary people never get these rates.

Point taken, but I seem to remember that when I charged items on my Amex or Visa card overseas, the translation rate was pretty much what the currency markets were going for that day. However, if you're talking about a typical local money changer, then you're probably paying for his new car! :D

I think it represents a somewhat new trend where the destillery themselves incorporate the speculator value already in the original price (New Black Bowmore pricing being perhaps the most extreme example).

This has already happened in the world of high-end California cabernets. Things like Screaming Eagle and Harlan Estate have gone through the roof as prices in the secondary market were substantially higher (2x-4x) than what the vintners charged. They probably also used the rationale, "Since my wine is world class, why shouldn't I charge what first growth Bordeaux go for?"

:(

Or maybe, "Since people are willing to pay that much for my wine, why shouldn't I get the money, instead of some bozo with an eBay account?"

Exactly right. And in California, the ability to get the highest prices for one's "cult" cabernet has also become a game whose outcome will reflect the size of one's manhood.

Further, the secondary market for fine wine is much more developed than that for whisky, what with WineBid.com and Wine Commune on the web, in addition to your traditional auction houses. EBay is basically non-existent in wine auction-land now, ever since they changed their policy regarding wine several yrs ago...

More info than you needed...

But interesting nonetheless, thank you. I'm as amazed by what goes on in the wine world as some are at what goes on in the whisky world, that I take for granted.
