What should I buy?

Postby pkt77242 » Sun Jan 18, 2009 7:24 pm

I have about $250 I got for Christmas and my birthday that I am going to use to buy whisky. Please help me decide what to buy, feeling free to mix and match from the list and staying around $250. Also please post why you selected the whiskies. I am also open to other suggestions as well though remember that AZ has a poor selection and most places won't ship here as it is illegal. Thank you

I would go for a selection including the Laph QC, redbreast (haven't tried it) and the laddie full strength.

i would go for the glenfarclas 21, laphroaig cs, and oban 14. A selection of exellent whiskies and falls just under budget. The Glenfarclas 21 is a really great value whisky.

My choices...

Laphroaig 10YO CS
Glenfarclas 21YO
Cragganmore 12YO
Redbreast 12YO

All established classics. $250 on the nose. A wonderful range of differing flavour sensations.

Choices selected,
Laphroaig 10yo CS, Great price at $50 for a great Islay, I'd get two! :D

Glenfarclas 17 & 21yo, The 21yo is more rounded than the 17yo which is no slouch in it's own right. Both reflect the high quality of Glenfarclas.

Signatory Highland Park 20yo CS, Signatory does some very nice cask strength HP's. For just $120 it's almost a no-brainer!

Cheers!

I picked the following:

Laph 10 CS - really great, and $50 is cheap.
Sig HP 20 - Always worth trying an older HP, and $120 is worth a try.
Oban 14 - I like it, and I had to find something less than $80 to fit the bill.

I went with the Lap CS, the Laddie FS, and the Springbank 15, mostly cuz I like them. Not a broad range, I know, but what the heck.

Judging from the results, looks like the Lap was a winner.

Thank you to everyone for your feedback so far.

I picked up a bottle of the Laph CS today as it was the last one left and almost everyone has recomended it. It even rang up for the price of the regular 10 ($38).

Keep the votes coming as I still have over $200 to spend. Thank you for the help.

Picked up a bottle of Glenfarclas 21 today. I still have about $100 to spend, and am open to suggestions.

Yup, this is a great choice! though I would add a tenner and sub. the Cragganmore for the Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or.

I'm just sampling the Nectar D'Or. It really is quite rich, a full nose which translates well onto the palate - a distinct flavour of "sweet wood", like sandalwood, or cinammon sticks, followed by a sweet round malty finish.

Very tasty! One of the best Glenmorangies i reckon...and I've tried at least 10!

Laph 10 CS - for some Islay
Auch 10 (or select) - to have some lowland around.

I went for the peat of the Lap 10yo CS
Redbreast for wonderful value for money and an excellent dram.
Highland park for what is hopefully a wonderful full bodied fulflavoured HP at CS and also a bit of age.
Then lastly the Glenmorangie Nector D'or just to fill up the order.

I went for the Bruichladdich Links which I just had lastnight and it was really good. The oban 14 which I have had many times which I like. The Glenfiddich 21 which I haven't had but I have had the 18 and I liked it. The Glenmo b/c every Glenmo I have had I like a lot.
