Glenfeddich Special Reserve

I was given a 1.75L bottle of Glenfeddich Special Reserve, with-out one of those paper strips across the top of the cap, like the liquor stores have, and I've had this bottle, which is in a gold colored swing holder, since about 1988. How do I tell if it's got any value? Markings on the bottom of the bottle: A number "6" and three numbers in a row "6198". Never been opened. Am I sitting on a gold mine???

No gold mine I'm afraid to say Sadie. I think this is the equivalent to today's 12. Value - I'm not so sure, there is a 70cl one on ebay, keep an eye on that and extrapolate the price accordingly perhaps say x2 or x3 at most (assuming this is the same bottle).

Unfortunately, aside from the odd format, your Glenfiddich "Special Reserve" is the basic stuff and it won't age in the bottle either. Personally, I would just drink the stuff - with a few friends, of course. If you want to make money on old bottles, go for wine...

You know I've really fallen in love with Glenfiddich recently. It's almost too subtle for newbies-like me when I first started. I think the most interest here would be from experience whisky anoraks that want to investigate the changes in the whisky over time.
