Favorite Highland Park OB?

Postby talisker10 » Sun Jun 14, 2009 3:58 am

I have never had the 25 or 30 year HP, my favorite is the 12 (I know a bit odd). What's your favorite? (My real favorite is the HP Lone Star Cask 1st edition..but that is hardly widely available)

I own the 12, 18 and have sampled the 15yo but have not had the others (yet!)

I voted for the 18yo however the 12yo is a staple around here and does not come far behind. I would rank the 15 last IMO

I haven't tried the 25 or the 30 but the 18 is my favourite of the rest. I like both the 12 and 15 too but feel they could benefit from a higher strength - especially the 15.

I like them all but the 15.. Imho, the 12 and the 25 share a profile of cereal, honey, heather, gentle peat and whiff of smoke with a lot of flowers (rose) in the 25, a very present oak and some strange stuff like Touron, turkish delight (hence the rose !) making it imho very interesting and veeeeery drinkable...!
But the profile I always look for in HP is the Honey/Chocolate and in this case 18 is for me the most balanced.. 30 looks to me like the 18 on steroids :D

The 15 would be my odd duck of the flock. Where do there citruses come from ?!

Enjoyment/price ratio wise *I won't say "quality/price" because imho, the quality is in everyone of them*, the 12 is my perfect everyday dram but the 18 and the 30 always win

My fav would be the 21 though. What a beautiful whisky !

The 18 Year Old for me...
Well nigh perfectly proportioned with a lengthy finish that glows softly.

Now, were the 53.5%ABV edition of the 25 Year Old still being marketed, my decision would undoubtedly be a much more difficult one.

I voted for the 25 because for me it's a really stunning dram.
I also think that the price is okay for a 25 year old cask strengh if you compare it to Islay Obs of the same age.
I also like the 12 and the 18 y.o as every day malts but the 25 is something special.

I've tried all of those in the poll except the 15; of those, in absolute terms I'd say the 30 just about edges it, then the 25 as a very close second. However, in terms of value I'd go with the 18 every time.

For the record though, my absolute favourite HP thus far has to be a G&M Reserve bottling from cask 5820 for the Dutch market.

I voted for the 18yo as I think that it is an amazing whisky and a great value as well (about $80). I really enjoyed the 25 and 30 when I had them but not for the price (especially the 30). I would love to try the 18 at CS though.

The Lone Star Cask I mentioned was a 14 year Cask Strength. Absolutely amazing. Hopefully HP will start offering a 15 or 18 CS.

I've tasted the 18yo, 21yo, 25yo and 30yo on my blog recently. The 21yo was clearly the winner (certainly when you consider the price) with the 30yo coming in second (in absolute terms, because it's probably too expensive).

None of the above. I know HP doesn't use caramel any more but when they did I got into HP IB's exclusively. Signatory, Scott's Selection and Cadenheads do fine Highland Parks, and at cask strength too! :P

Cheers!

It was a tough decision between the 30 and 25. I find the 25 to be more aggressive (forward) in its approach. The 30 to be more relaxed or laid back. Eventually I chose the 30.

I much prefer the 12 to the 15 and 18 on the other end of the spectrum.

As for IBs, the Oklahoma 27 single cask bottling is the bomb. Binny's 33 and 34 single casks and the Old Oaks Cigar 29 are also exceptional.

PS. I prefer the Grapevine 15 to the Lonestar 14.

I had to vote for the 12 as this is the only expression I have tried in my limited SM journey. About halfway through my bottle of it now and it seems like it gets better and better each time I come back to it.

Like C57 i also missed out on the 53.5% that were sold on here recently
Out of the official bottlings i like the 30yr. I have almost finished a bottle and sadly it will not be replaced but for value i would go with the 18.
I am looking forward to getting hold of the 21yr in the future to compare, i have heard its really good and the flavour profile is similar to the 30.

I am tempted to change my vote to the 18 (from the 12). I think my first initial reaction to the 18 must have been due to batch variation. I had one dram a year after that and it was very good..I was recently given a bottle of HP 18 and it is just amazing. Very, very good without the overly strong butter/toffee flavors from the first HP 18 I tried. I will have to sample some more 12 and 18 just to be sure :)

The 12 for me ... a great quality drink for a great price ... everything after that gets a bit expensive in Ireland. I have always preferred the 25 & 12 over te 18 but that not saying the 18 is bad  Eveything from HP is class if you ask me

For me the 18yo Highland Park is the best choice for the money, I think the 30yo is a good whisky, buy it if you can. However if not prepared to pay the cash for the older ones, 18yo is the best buy out there.

At this moment I would vote for the 25yo. I tried the 30yo a couple of times three years ago and was not impressed, but I would like to sample the more recent batches. I like the 12yo less and less, while the 18 is solid but was a bit tired with the last bottle.

Of the ones I've tried I voted for the 30.

The 12, good enough to drink again if offered for free.
The 16(duty free) undrinkable and I gave away the bottle.
The 18, a huge improvement over the 12 and I'd buy a bottle if it cost $60 less in Australia.
The 30 was the only one with a real wow factor for me, but at AUD$430 even duty free, no chance of buying a bottle without help from the lottery.

I just joined ( see the new members introduction erea ) and although I didn't have many different malts yet I was lucky enough that Highland Park 12y was as far as memory serves me the second malt I tried!

It still rates high but a few months ago I bought a 18y :D and that is now my favourite HP! I also had the 15y and agree with all you here that the 15y is good but lacking in power compared to the 12 and 18.
