Your favourite out of my top 10

Postby MoreDalmore » Wed Aug 12, 2009 7:01 pm

Hello everybody !

I just joined and wanted to let you know what my favourites are at the moment ( as I only had 32 different malts so far! ) and wondered what your favourite is from these.

As I read these forums for a couple of days now I think what may be your number 1 but we'll see!!

I have only had two of the Whiskies on your list. The Quinta Ruban and the Dalwhinnie 15yo and between those two the Quinta Ruban is my favorite hands down.

Voted HP18

I suspect that will win by a fair margin

Same here. I've had an Aberlour 15yo though, which was excellent, but I miss the Islay whiskies.

The Islay whiskies are missing for 2 reasons Johan.
As of now I only had 2 of them ( Bowmore 12 and Caol Ila 12 ) and it's been quite a while since I tasted them both. For now I'm not that to found of them but I plan to try them in the ( hopefully ) near future!

I am planning to visit some nosing @ tastings late this year of next year and hopefully with some Islay whiskies.

I also had a Aberlour 15 ( Cuvee Marie d'Ecosse ) which I found very similar to the 16y if my memory serves me correct. So I let that out of my top 10.

I understand. I had to learn to drink them too. At first I wasn't so fond of the heavy peat and smoke but I've appreciated it more and more. I've tried other whiskies which I also like but I keep going back to the Islay ones.

I've only had three on your list, and the one I voted for already seems to be winning hands down. Mind you, I payed quite a bit more for it than I have for whiskies that I prefer much more, so I don't think I'll be buying it again.

I do feel I will learn to drink them ( and more importantly enjoy them ! ) too as I did finish my bottle of Caol Ila without the desire to spit it out

Hopefully I get a change during a tasting session later this year or maybe I will buy some minitures first to find out which one fits my tastes best.

Highland Park as well. The HP 18 sticks out.

I've tried or owned 'em all. Especially HP 18, Glenmo Nectar D'or - a fairly recent revelation, and Glenfiddich 15.

but wouldn't say no to any of them.

I like many of them and find them nice, everyday whiskies (not had the Dalmore nor the Arran). Last sample of the HP 18 I had was as good as the HP 12 but previous bottles have been very good.

I have really enjoyed the Glenfiddich 15 though. I like it more than the 18. Has a wonderful spiciness to it.

Highland Park 18 Year Old for me as well.

Is there an echo in here?

Amongst the 'also-rans', the Aberlour 16 Year Old edges out the rest of the competition (in my view, at any rate) for 2nd place.

I had the Glenfiddich a couple of times ( at least 5 times ) and apart from the last I really enjoyed them! I found the last bottle missing some power and only had some spiciness in the finish.. :(

I therefor longed for more and that was the main reason to buy the HP 18 instead of my usual HP 12 after reading a lot of good things about it on the net!
And I agree completely; it's a great whisky! :D

It was outside my budget up till then but I managed to get a bottle not for the normal € 60,- but for € 50,- in a shop 5 minutes walking from my home!! :D I will most certainly buy a bottle again ( and again, and again )

It seems I'm the lone selector of Aberlour 16, an excellent malt even over the HP 18 IMHO since I'm in no way a fan of HP OB's.

Cheers!

Clear victory for HP 18 which was what I expected but not with such a margin.
30 Votes so far; all in all not bad for a first poll I think. 8)

Sorry to see no votes for the Dalmore 12 Black Isle :(
Does this mean people don't like it or it is just a version of the 12 they didn't taste yet?

I think I will start a new poll after I tasted 2 more Dalmore expressions ( the 15 y and the Grand Rerserva ) which are both on my wishlist for the near future ( read : the coming 2 months ).

I voted for HP 12 only because this and Glenfiddich 15 are the only two I have had on this list.

Has to be the HP 12yo ... what a great whisky. It must be the best value for money malt in your list. Well for me any in my neck of the woods anyway.

I answered HP12 but then its the only one on your list Ive had.

Of the five SMSW Ive had (Speyburn 10yo, Glenmorangie 10yo, Macallan 12yo "Sherry", Highland Park 12yo and Laphroaig 10yo) I have to say the HP12, Mac12 and Lap10 are in a 3-way tie. They are all so very different its like comparing football, baseball and basketball.
