Battle of the Ubiquitous

Postby talisker10 » Sat Sep 05, 2009 2:53 am

Okay, you can get these two SMS just about at any bar, or decent steakhouse. I am going to have to go with Glenlivet.

Livet 12 is the runaway winner for me.

Glenlivit has way more flavour than the Glenfiddich. No contest!

I think they're both pretty poor and probably wouldn't pay for either. But a free choice from a friend with nothing else would have to be the Glenfiddich.

If you are sticking with the 12 year old I have to say Glenlivet, but I did find the 15 year old Glenfiddich quite nice. Though I haven't tried any other Glenlivet but the 12.

I personally find the Glenfiddich to be a little more savory, but with that added savory it lacks depth of flavor. I liken it to Chicken Breast either made plain with a few seasonings, to one thats been marinated for a bit. In the end they are both basically the same thing, I just find the flavors in the 'livet pop ever so slightly more.

When it comes to the 12s, the 'fiddich wins hands down for me.

However, when it comes to the 15s, I would pick the Glenlivet 15 French Oak by a hair.

Both 18 year olds are very good.

Usually if that's all they've got I'll just take a Dewer's.

Once again I would like to thank Drammed for his idea to start these head to heads. I am frankly surprised Glenlivet is running away with it. I am also surprised there aren't more people like Wave that would just say no.

I hate to admit to this but I've done a fair bit of HTHs between Glenlivet 12 and Glenfiddich 12 (and NAS). I much prefer the current bottlings of both to that which was offered up 10 years ago. The livet is cleaner than it once was (less estery) with lots of freshly cut fruits and cocoanut. The fiddich has more apple and pear characteristics instead of being malt dominated. Between the two current versions, I take the Fiddich as I like the combination of apples, pears, malt and light spices.

[biased]Well, Glenlivet 12 was my first ever single malt and was what got me hooked on single malt whisky, so my vote goes with that.[/biased]

Historic favouritism not included, my vote still goes to the Glenlivet; it's just got more about it than the Glenfiddich for me, which seems a bit basic - wishy-washy, if you will - in comparison.

If you like pear flavor then the Glenfiddich would be a better choice. I voted for the Fidd only because I've had the Livet many times so it's gotten a bit vanilla for me...but the Fidd...wow, that's...different. In a good way.

Why do I always seem in the minority? :P Of course, what did I drink tonight but the Glenlivet 12.

I have to vote for the Glenlivet 12, but if the Glenfiddich 12 was the toasted oak reserve version then I may have to rethink...

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Many, many years ago, I would have taken the Glenlivet 12YO over the NAS Glenfiddich. When the first release of the Glenfiddich 12YO came onto the marketplace, it marginally edged out the Glenlivet 12YO for me. But even as it appears to have improved over the intervening period, so too has the Glenlivet 12YO... and the latter perhaps more so.

Honestly, I can't pick between the two current versions (so close in quality they are for me), so I won't vote this time around.
