Glenlivet Nadurra or French Oak

Postby AdamMY » Sat Sep 12, 2009 9:25 pm

I really want to try another Glenlivet besides their 12 year old, and as these are sold for roughly the same price, I am wondering what others think, is one far superior?

Also some general tasting notes on these would be nice if you have them.

I love the Nadurra. As a cask strength whisky you can have many flavor profiles in the bottle as you add water to your taste. Personally I drink it with only a hint of water as I like the bolder taste.

Preference for me is the Nadurra. Look for coconuts and tropical fruits. I'm sure some others will have additional thoughts. Also, I'd recommend checking out the 2007 Live Tastings for Glenlivet (two events).

I just finished a bottle of Nadurra and I will definitely get another one. The French oak is not bad, but for me the Nadurra is on another level.

The 15YO French Oak Reserve is a delicious whisky in its own right - no doubt.

But the 16YO cask strength Nàdurra is, quite simply, Glenlivet unleashed!

No contest. Nadurra is to the 12 \yo what cream is to skim milk.

Or something...terrible analogy I know, but I did 3 gigs yesterday and I'm half way to being a zombie today. :insane:

But it is amazing to find such a quallity whisky so readily available, and affordable.

I voted Nadurra as well.

My question is who voted for the French oakbut didn't admit to it.

I've been through a bottle of the French Oak but have had just one small sample of the Nàdurra.

I found the Nàdurra far more interesting and complex, so I voted for that.

I'm waiting for payday, but it does sound like its Nadurra hands nearly hands down.

yeah in the sense that some mystery person voted for the French Oak and did not explain their reasoning.

Though it was quite Unanimous in the posts.

Just to throw a different opinion out there...

I had a bottle of Nadurra and I ended up giving much of it away. The ABV was unrestrained and had no balance. I did, however, try some at a recent tasting and found it much more enjoyable, so maybe I had an off bottle.

What's interesting is that there is a Glenlivet gift pack available that contains a FO, a Nadurra, and two Glencairn nosing glasses, all for about $80. They were more plentiful earlier in the year, but they can still be found if you look hard enough. I like the FO, but not enough to buy it again, otherwise I'd get a gift pack myself.

It's Nadurra for me, but in large part because I can't stand the French Oak. Had a mini on the plane last month and try as I might I couldn't pick out anything really distinctive about it. Nothing offensive, of course, but also quite bland for my taste.

It's probably just me, but I think the FO is quite similar to the Balvenie DW, and even the Dalmore 12. All three are very sherried scotches, and while Dalmore isn't technically Speyside, it's geographically very close to the Speyside distilleries. Of the three I do think that FO is of the least quality, but still, it's much better than some I could mention.

I'll definitely be getting the Nadurra, and as I like the 12 year old so much I might pick up a bottle of the 15 also.

Thanks for everyones help.
