What to buy next?

Its time for a new bottle. Which one to buy next and why? They are both on sale: Aberlour 12 is $32.99 and the Glenmo 10 is $34.99

If they're both new to you, I agree with Johan - buy them both.

I don't much care for either, but I voted for the Glenmorangie as I find it has some unique character that the Aberlour lacks.

I voted Aberlour. The biggest benefit I see to the Aberlour is the ability to see if it is worth perusing up the line. Aberlour 16 is under $60 around me while the Glenmorangie 18 is up in Macallan 18 price range.

That's a great price LSD. If you can, I'd get one at that price. I haven't see a Glenmo 18 under $100 in over a year and those were ones I found in a little mom & pop shop with price tags that were faded. Basically the new 18 runs $140 here and the older bottles have been repriced as people have looked up the restocking fee.

This was the thought that immediately sprang to my mind: "Set those dollars aside, add to them and go for the Aberlour 16 Year Old, which is a very, very good whisky!"

Of course, there's also the excellent a'bunadh to think about too.

Sale prices are nice, but real quality trumps them every time.

It depends whether you want sherry or bourbon maturation really. I voted for Aberlour because its cold here and I'm in the mood for sherry, but it could have gone either way.

Don't you mean New Hampshire? NH is the state with cheaper prices, as all liquor is state controlled and they have the buying pull to negotiate cheaper prices from the importers.

Yes, I know that New Hampshire has lower prices but NH is twice as far a drive for me compared to Vermont...so Ganga is also right, and more right for my situation! Plus...my wife really likes Vermont: it's our favourite state overall.

Hmmm. I also noticed that they have Oban 14 and A'bunadh on sale, both for $46.99.... I have had Oban 14 before, it was excellent, but I'm not sure if I should jump in and buy the A'bunadh without trying it. Never had a cask strength sherry before. Maybe I should start a new poll on these two.

The nice thing about cask strength whisky is you can add water until you are happy. I'm not a fan of Oban but if you enjoy it $47 is a great price.

The ONLY possible consideration running contrary to this recommendation, in my mind at least, is that the Oban usually costs significantly more in my neck of the woods than does the a'bunadh. You'll have to judge the relative cost merits as regards your local pricing on this comparison, however, before deciding.

That said, I look on Oban 14 Year Old as a whisky that's not quite what it COULD be, while the a'bunadh is, 100%, WHAT IT IS, if you get my drift.

I get you. I think I'm gonna get the a'bunadh. Seems very intriguing. I had my first "true" cask strength on Thanksgiving (Scott's 1990 Bruichladidch). I think it was 59% abv and it was a treat. Other then that, I have never had a SMSW over 48% abv.
