Trio of greats!

I opened my Lagavulin 12 C/S last night and it gave me a unique opportunity to compare it to my Ardbeg Uigeadail and Laphroaig 10 C/S, which are also open. They are very far apart in price, they are very close in flavor profiles. My back to back to back impression is: Lagavulin has similar tastes to the Uigeadail, but the Laphroaig has a special kick that beats them both, and I'm trying to keep the price difference out of the equation, but...$149 vs $79 vs $48..Hmmm

I haven't tried the Lagavulin 12, but I do have the two others, and for my tastes, the Laphroaig is a hands-down winner, even though I love Ardbeg's others, like the TEN.

I think the Oogie could use a bit more character, but that's just my opinion as a newbie.

The Laphroaig 10 C/S just spills across your palate like an oil-slick fire. It gets my vote.

There are times, when I probably couldn´t tell these three nominees apart ( about 3/4 of the time ) , but still I would go for Lagavulin...no Ardbeg..., no definately Laphroaig..., hell, maybe I oughtta stick to bourbon.

I had a friend visiting today from Belgium, he's a Lagavulin lover, but I thought I'd bring out both the Uigeadail and Laphroaig CS - he loved them both, but we both agreed that the Uigeadail is a more refined, gentleman's whisky, while the Laphroaig is a more young, in-your-face dram, a little more righteous.

I came away from tonight (after about 7 or 8 drams) with a new found appreciation for the Uigeadail that I didn't have before.

Oogie for me, regardless of price (although I haven't had the Laphroaig in a while). Lacking in character? :shock:

Lagavulin just edging out the Ardbeg for me.

Personally, I much prefer the Lagavulin and the Ardbeg to the Laphroaig.

It's a tough choice but if I have to pick one of the three I would go for Ardbeg. It really stands out with it's "explosion" as it hits your tongue. Laphroaig also gains point for it's phenolic and special character. I was a little dissapointed with Lagavulin. I had expect it to be more peaty and fiery.
I wouldn't like to be without any of them, though!!

This is like choosing which child you love best, but I have to give it to Laphroaig by a slight margin over Lagavulin (which is, in turn, only a slight margin over Ardbeg).

Oogie. I love the Laphroaig as well but the Oogie just hits all the right spots. Haven't had chance to try the Lagavulin 12 yet.

Does anyone remember Talisker 12? I think it was better than any o the 3 listed. Talisker 10 isnt close and Talisker 18 doesnt have it. 12 was the perfect age for Talisker, rivaling Laphroaig 16! Does anyone know what happened to this classic. TOO GOOD for public consumption?

Seems like I used to pay about 18 US dollars for the stuff(1986), things have changed!

Surely you must mean Lagavulin 16 y. As far as I know Laphroaig never did an official 16yo except for a vintage 1970 exclusive for the Italian market.
G&M also made some 16y for Sestante, Italy.

And 12 year old Talisker? How old are you???
The only 12 year old I can remember is one that I saw at auction, exclusively made for the US market. If I'm not wrong this bottle fetched £1500.00 at McTears in 2001 or 2002! I know there was also a cheaper one by J Walker & Sons, but I have never ever seen this one at auctions or in real life.

right Lagavulin 16 was what I meant. Talisker 12 did have a picture of the Johnnie Walker figure on the label. Outstanding! It was much smokier and peppery, smoother and layered, more like a little lighter version of Lagavulin 16.

Contrary to popular (and respected) opinion of others here, I reckon the Laphroaig CS is the weakest of the three.

I've tackled it several times now, and there's just something in there that doesn't gel with me.

Lagavulin by a nose, then Uigedail.
