Plastic "glasses"

Following on from C_I's post in the Chat forum, who would drink whisky from a plastic tumbler?

Uaagghhh!!!! no way... that is worse than drinking out of cans(not that you can get whiskey in cans). But to be quite honest I have as when offered samples in a retailer they are always in those little plastic thimble cups so does that count. Abomination to the high heavens or the depts of hell does not really matter which as they both have theri standards to keep

I prefer to drink all my alcohol from glass and hate any form of plastic container. Maybe it's all in the mind but it really effects my whole experience.

This brings back unhappy memories of those wee plastic "thimble" cups some companies used at tastings in the 1990s (no longer, I hope!).

Whisky from plastic is a truly awful taste experience.

Mine too, but I blame that on the Tennesee "Whiskey" involved, not the plastic cup. (Well I probably deserve the blame, but that's never stopped me before...)

Sadly this is soon to be the norm in Glasgow. Despite publicans from the Pot Still, Ben Nevis, Lismore, Uisge Beatha etc mounting a vociferous protest, the licensing board has insisted glass must be withdrawn from the shelves. Can you imagine sipping a 26 year old Genfarclas from a PLASTIC tumbler?

Oh dear, I'm the only one so far that would. Of course, I'd much prefer not to, but I don't think I'd leave a bar if it was serving whisky in plastic out of necessity. I'd probably be more worried about why it is being served in a plastic glass in the first place, rather than any concern for the drinking experience.

I guess I have a different perspective - and I must say I don't quite "get" the question. If I'm at home, I don't drink out of plastic cups anyway. If I'm at a picnic, and that's all they have, and I'd like a bit of Jim Beam White, I don't see the problem. Actually, if I'm on a picnic, and someone offers me a 35yr Speyburn OMC in a plastic cup, I still don't see the problem.

I was at a store just yesterday trying a number of samples from plastic cups. So my answer is yes, when free samples are being provided I will drink fine sprits out of a plastic cup.

In any other situation I would very much avoid the plastic cup though.

You have illustrated the question yourself. At a picnic, you drink out of plastic by necessity, and in such an informal situation you would be far more likely to nip a Jim Beam than a Speyburn 35. At home, you would never choose to use plastic. It's not appropriate to your purpose. The situation being described is a matter of taking the appropriate choice away from persons attempting to enjoy a fine dram in public accommodations. If I have to drink a Cadenheads Clynelish out of plastic at the Bow Bar in October, I'm going to be a bit upset. If that is indeed how it's going to be, the point could be made that it will hurt exactly that segment of the trade that has nothing to do with the type of problems being described.

I'm not going to comment any further on this until I have actually read the article ( ) and perhaps done a little more research on the subject. There is a tendency sometimes for us to let speculation and rumor run away with us, and the next thing you know, we are talking about Bruichladdich's column still or such. The only thing I will add is that I wonder whether there might be plasticware that we would find an acceptable alternative to glass; the image we have when plastic is mentioned is of disposable beer cups and thimbles. The notion of plastic, after all, is pretty...plastic.

This does seem like another nail in the coffin lid of pubs. In my area I have seen a 50% drop in the number of pubs in the last ten years. The thought of drinking out of a plastic 'glass' will not encourage me to go into a pub.

Some will say that is better than getting a broken glass pushed into your face, but I have never seen that happen or been in a pub where that is likely to happen. Most intelligent people know the pubs to avoid.

Plastic glasses in bars in Glasgow is the start of the nightmare. Mr T I am sure if you are back at the Bow before the end of this year your dram will be safe but my big fear is that this could roll out throughout the UK.

The ban is seen as a solution to glass attacks in Glasgows bars which has been reported to be 1.5 per week, ( is the .5 where someones been assaulted with a hlaf pint glass)? Now Glasgow is a rough place but for me all bars here are going to be affected due to a few incidents within probably the same few bars.

This is a disaster for the guys at the Pot Still, Lismore etc. The city councel can`t get there head around the idea that this will effect Glasgow as a whole and its culture and tourism. I don`t think people are going to be pleased drinking a fine malt from a plastic glass, and the council are not going to budge on this. It is going to take the consumer to help the bar owners out. Bars have until the end of the year to comply.

Irishwhiskeychaser, you will be fine this time in the Pot Still, however, the guys there are at the forefront of having this crazy law changed. I enjoy my dram from glass and am really pleased to see more and more whisky bars use more specialised glasses, it is just sad to see such progress go down the pan because a few bars in Glasgow have problems with a few yobs.

I hope you enjoy your time at the Pot Still, I am sure you will, however if this law goes through, it might not be such a good experience next time. I don't want this to happen, I want the potstil and the others in Glasgow to be able not only to serve us our drink properly but to ensure that new drinkers are being educated in how to enjoy our whisky!!!

I've just had a dram at the Pot Still (Bladnoch 10YO Flora and Fauna since you ask) and Ken Storrie is absolutely determined to fight this crazy ruling all the way to Europe if necessary

I hear a rumour that the Scottish Justice Minister, asked if she supported this move by Glasgow City Council, persistently prevaricated. Yes, Iknow that's what politicians "do" for a living, but you'd think that she'd have said yes if the Scottish Executive was keen on such a ban.

My source in Edinburgh (well, an Edinburgher I met in a Glasgow pub, to be truthful) tells me that the Council there has dropped a proposal to introduce a glass ban.

Re bans (no, not the sunglasses Mr T) - the smoking ban comes into force in pubs on the morning of Sunday 26th, so drinking in Scottish pubs should be a lot kinder on the eyes and lungs. Folks are already in training for the big day - my Edinburgh source (it's that man again!) says he saw only two people smoking in the Bow Bar last night

Just to add a little food for though but it wasn't all that long ago that glass wasn't the norm for drinking out of. I do believ that a Quaich, which is metal, is the traditional drinking glass for whisky in scotland and in the US tin or wooden glasses were the norm for the first woodsman that would have been distilling bourbon. I understand that people like a nice presentation, (I'm included I have a dozen or so glencairn glasses as well as some nice stemmed glasses that I drink from) but lets not feel that plastic is a change from tradition. It is just a change from the way we currently enjoy our whiskey. I have seen some acrylic glasses that you would swear were glass (the right weight and feel) so all won't be lost if forced to switch to plastic, it will still be the type of plastic glass used that determines the experience. If you poured me a dram of whisky in a 1 liter mug I would look at you like you were crazy but it is still glass.
