I find it better without water. I have tried it with a drop but it doesn't seem to improve it so I'll levae it as it is in future

Which reminds me, time to open a bottle of Batch 17 to find out what it's like.

Earlier batches I was careful in using water, but since batch 15 I dilute it quite heavily.

I haven't tried an extensive number of these, but I did try water in an earlier one and preferred it wothout. Since then, always without water.

I think water even a just a drop or two mucks up any sherry casked whisky and the A'bunadh is so smooth even at 120 proof +/- it just doesn't need it.

Currently have an older batch #11 open and it seemed a little syrupy, so I added some water last night. The nose exploded with new aromas, but the taste was hurt by the H2O. Maybe just a drop or two next time. I've been experimenting with proper water dilution for each style lately. They are all so different in what amount is best that I've had to amend my notes to keep up. So I voted to dilute because I like to see the results, but I generally drink without it.

The first time I tried it, I added a drop or two of water... but it really didn't seem to need it. Although, perhaps I should start cutting it with water again cause it seems to be disappearing rather quickly.

I've heard this argument a lot, and I think the best way to refute it is that it says right on the box to dilute it.

I buy cask strengths because:

1) More bang for your buck
2) Unchillfiltered and often uncolored
3) Almost always better casks
4) Less susceptible to oxidation (!)

-- I was being dramatic for effect! Besides, a 'dash of water', which is what's recommended, ain't gonna do much for 60% abv whisky -- unless your dashes are bigger than mine.

I've tried all ways - neat, with a water and even with ice.

I will say that it's very nice over ice in summer, provided you don't use too much ice. The melting ice changes the character with every sip.

Neat it's a powerful, almost harsh (to my taste buds) dram. Definitely one to sip slowly.

Generally though I have it with just a wee drop of water - not much but a drop. Took me a while to find out just how much to add and, oddly, wasn't too keen on it before I found the Magic Amount.

Depends on my mood, but I'd say I drink it neat about half the time, and with a drop or two of water the other half. Without water it has a bold burn to it, with water it has a smoother taste, but still rich in flavor.

I used to take it with a drop of water but now go commando. I find that, as with all cask strengths, holding it in the mouth for 20 seconds seems to calm the mouth down, allowing a second tatste to be more rewarding. Something to do with saliva production I suspect!

that's it for me too. If it comes at the end of a dramming night, neat it is. If nearer the beginning, a "splash" helps...and this whisky, certainly batch 16 which I currently have, can take it.

Well after hearing all the praise for this expression I picked up a bottle of batch #16.

I think I just don't care for (or understand) this malt.

HOWEVER, I have recently tried Glenfarclas 105
and that is going to be my next sherry monster purchase
and yes, it is a malt that will be enjoyed neat. :wink:

Funny, I tried the 105 and found it a bit TOO sweet, unsubtle, compared to the Aberlour!

Either, just depends on mood or when I'm drinking it, if it's before a meal as an aperitif then with a drop of water, if after I'd drink it neat.

When I have it neat I find the sherry a bit strong for my taste buds and I can't pick up on anything else. A few drops of water helps to dilute that sherry and I get a better sense of the underlying whisky. It's a great dram.
