How many bottles do you go through in a year?

Postby Mr Fjeld » Thu Sep 06, 2007 3:21 am

I had a look at Mr T's thread about "your first post" and thought "wow, that's a long time ago - must be a good forum" . Then I suddenly realised that I've had quite a few bottles since then - but I cannot possibly figure out how many. I don't know if this question has been asked before but how many bottles do you approximately drink in a year?

I think I drink around a bottle a month give or take - maybe more take?

Eh...good poll. I'm in the 20-30 range, though probably closer to 20. Maybe closer to 30. I don't know. I probably don't want to know. Actually, a bottle every 2 weeks sounds about right. I have been single the last couple of years and don't have anyone telling me I can't have 1 or 2 nice size drams each night. Also have a bit of help from some friends, though they're pretty much all married now so that doesn't happen as much as I like anymore. Help is always appreciated as it means I finish bottles faster and can move on to different bottles.

I just voted 10-20, but I think that, like many here, I don't really know. If you have friends helping you, it doesn't really count, does it? I can't even begin to imagine how many bottles Lawrence opens in a year. How many does he finish in a year? How much help does he get? I guess the real question is what is your average nightly consumption.

I have no idea - but my guess would be roughly a bottle a month. As I buy two or more bottles a month, I know I'm in trouble.

That's not an issue for me at least as I mostly drink my whisky alone. It would perhaps be different if I lived in the proximity of the town centre and was more accessible but there you go :? However, I just discovered a neighbour with a passion for whisky so it might change in the future.
I guess the real question is what is your average nightly consumption.

I suppose many - including myself - only drink in the weekends, at least not on a daily basis so the nightly average is pretty much ruled out I guess?

Between one and two bottles a month for me - which is also what I'm trying to restrict my buying to, but I'm a sucker for a good deal when I see one (having bitten the 'malt prices to go up' hook!).

True, but it also makes it tough to answer this question. But, as I mentioned, I don't get much help anymore.

Lets see, if I take two drams a day, how many drams in a bottle? You will say it depends on the size of the drams? I estimate maybe there are 12 drams in a bottle? So, a bottle last me a week. There are 52 weeks a year. And I drink more during holidays and there are 15 holidays in a year.

Am I the only one that is honest here? :D

12 drams in a bottle :o That would make your drams around 6cl - which is a lot IMO. But each to his own...

I figure a dram to be around 2cl - but as I don't really measure, lets say 3cl as often as not. I don't dram on weekdays, which leave me friday, saturday & sunday, where I usually enjoy 2-4 drams pr evening. In the real world we are often doing stuff, visiting family & friends etc in the weekends, so max two dramming evenings for me most weekends. In other words 3*3*2 cl a week which more or less equals a bottle a month.
Once in a while I meet up with friends sharing this passion. And that is another story entirely.

Not sure how to count this one, as I always have a few on the go. I suppose a rough guide would be how many empties I throw out, though this wouldn't be entirely accurate either as sometimes I go through phases of opening a lot and other time finish a lot. But at a rough guess I seem to throw out 2 bottles a month. Is that bad???

I should hope so .... we'd have the whiskey police after you for throwing out full bottles but that would only be after I went through your rubbish to retrieve them first

I use to average about a bottle a month so that put me into the 12+ range. But over the last month or so, I have been finishing two full bottles a week. So in a month I added 8 bottles. Ouch...... :coffee:

I have slowed it back down now. 8)

And I'll just take a fifth.

Les, the 5th amendment doesn't apply in the UK--it's in the US Constitution!

I responded with 'just under ten'. On the other hand I've never really taken stock of the number of bottles finished. Perhaps it may raise concerns if I did. At the most I have 2 or 3 drams twice a week, perhaps slightly more when on holidays.

Your stole my 5th! This year may exceed 30 but usually it is more like about 15 including sharing with friends.

well, yes and no to under 10...

Postby Muskrat Portage » Sat Sep 08, 2007 11:10 pm

I ticked off "just under 10" and sat there chuckling away to myself. Yeah, I just finished off 7 bottles this month, however it took me at least 5 years to get to that point.
I would estimate that I empty 1-2 actual bottles a year. I probably have emptied the equivalent of over 10 bottles a year. When you have 60 opens at any given time it's hard to calculate the number of bottles you drain annually.

I don't, as a rule, drink one bottle empty before I start on a new one, I like variety far too much.

I was comfortable checking the 10-20 amount a couple of days ago.
Then I started to think about it. As long as the number relates to whiskey I think I'm still good with it. :)

If I add in gin...well.

So this morning I did some experiment. I took an empty 750 ml bottle and filled it with water. I took my favorite glass and poured a dram. I poured the water into the sink and poured another, counting the number of glasses I filled until the bottle is empty.

I counted 18 glasses! So a bottle last me 9 days!

40 days? To the Islay trip or am I missing something. I suppose it is. And I know I'm going to buy while I'm there so I'm still figuring out how to get them home. The best plan I can come up with at the moment is to fill my case up on the way over with as many empty wooden / metal whiskey boxes as I can find, and hope most of the bottles fit. And lots and lots of socks! (For padding - I'm not crazy!)

I seem to have a few of the metal Powers 12yo boxes which should do most bottles as they are a bit taller than the norm. Also a couple of Black Bush tubs, Midleton boxes, and a wooden Lockes box.

That said, when they xray my luggage on the way out and find a dozen whiskey boxes filled with socks they'll probably refuse to let me on anyway.

I voted for the 10 - 20 choice. I reckon I probably get through a bottle a month. Some months more, some months less.

I also must put my hands up and confess to having a good bottle of vodka in the freezer. If it was possible to have two votes, I'd also check this box

Oh yes! It goes all syruppy and frosts the outside of the glass when you pour it.

As Nick mentions, it's a great syrupy, refreshing drink. I add a splash of pomegranate juice to mine just now. Tastes great, and I can kid myself it's a health drink. It also counts as one of my 'five a day'

The question certainly takes on a different shade when you consider what else one might drink. Some here drink only whisky; their totals may seem higher in comparison to those who also drink other things.

I have been known to hoist a pint on occasion.

Probably 1 bottle a week which is why I voted 30+.

My consumption would drop radically if I could only afford blends. Laphroaig and Lagavulin have a lot to answer for.

I have an Uncle who drinks at least 1/2 a bottle of blended every night, smokes like a trouper and seems to be as fit as a fiddle. Hes nearly 70 now...

If you got to add whatever extra liquor you drink, the competition might get unfair, as I live amid millions of acres of vine and you know what one makes out of it? Round here, wine is the staple thing and no one turns a "blind mouth" to it, be it sweeeeet, red and strong or otherwise. Therefore I can assume for me, the bonus is SMSW, as counting so many bottles of wine is beyond my mathematical ability. I also am sympathetic with you lot, for whom wine is an exotic thing... I'll have an extraglass of this sweet ruby grenache on your health. It might help me count until 10 empty SMSW a year. Cheers boys (and girls of course)
