How many open bottles do you normally have?

Twelve out of thirty-five currently. I'll try to limit myself to between ten and fifteen open ones.

I only got about 3-4 open bottles. For the moment:

Ardbeg Rennaissance
Laphroaig 10yo
Laphroaig Cairdeas
And a bottle of Japanese whisky which I got as a present. Tastes really nice.

Oh man...I kinda feel bad admitting this. I currently I have 106 bottles open. :shock:

I did a semi-scientific test over the past couple of years, and found that as long as there is at least 1/3 of the bottle full it doesn't seem to affect the flavors much at all. I had several bottles that I had bought "doubles" of 3-5 years before, and then did a head-head test between unopened and stuff that had been open a long time. In general I found that the heartier malts were really difficult to distinguish, and the harsher malts tended to age out to smoothness. I had one bottle with only two fingers in it, and that one had turned really stale. Of course I store them in a light-sealed armoire usually in the original tins, so that probably helps.

Me too, I am starting to finish bottles before opening recent buys now. Soon I intend to do a side by side tasting of Lagavulin 16yo, one thats been a third full for over a year, one thats been half full for 6 months and another unopened to see how much different they are.

I had drifted up to the high 50s, but for the last three months I have been dilligently trying to clear up bottles that don't have much in them. I've got it down to about 35 now and I'm still working on it. It's a tough job ...

Willie JJ: I feel your pain.

I was in a similar situation with about 50 open bottles (though about 10 were Tequilas) and I have been trying hard to get the most empty ones finished. This became quite apparent when a few old bottles started to go "off". Most of them were standard bottles that I could take or leave, so no big loss, but now I'm a little more careful opening new bottles when I have a bunch of mostly drank, but not finished bottles kicking around.

It's a challenge, to be sure. :wink:

But that's one reason I always try to have small (50ml to 200ml) empties at hand in which to transfer those diminishing quantities languishing in the larger bottles.

Totally good idea. Smaller bottles aren't very common here, but perhaps some sample bottles would be a good idea. Or a argon / nitrogen wine saver might well work also...

I'm down to 21 open bottles now. For all future opened bottles, I'm going to pour a 50ml sample right after it's opened, and I'll compare it when the bottle is almost empty. This could be interesting!!!!

I used to have usually over 50 bottles but i am down to about 35. My current thinking is to drink the cheaper ones before buying anymore. I sold some last year but rather than collect now i will buy to drink etc.

Currently have 15 open bottles, but I'd like to not have more than 6-8 open at a time. I'm just starting out and had been sampling everything I bought immediately - hence all the open bottles. I've had a couple bottles of tequila go "off" and I'd like to avoid that w/my single malts. :yuk:

Jees! I thought I was bad with 40 to 50 open (which I've now reduced to 20ish)!!!!! I'm probably a little obsessive compulsive but I'd be worried about oxidisation by the time I got around to finishing off 93 bottles!

Off the top of my head I would said under 10. (i've culling quite a few lately.) But when I checked it's probably about 20. Still more work to do.

I guess anything from the Flora and Fauna range. You could imagine some nice soaps made by Flora & Fauna.
