I haven't been doing this long enough to have a "normal" number of open bottles. At the most so far I think I've had 10 or 11 open. At the moment I have six 70cl and four 20cl bottles open.

That's not bad considering that a week ago I had none. It's all thanks to something we had over here called the "Economic Stimulus Plan", and a tidy little tax bonus that we were encouraged to spend rather than squirrel away. I was all too happy to oblige, but I don't think they intended for me to stimulate the Scottish economy.

A cursory visual count from the front of the cabinet reveals 60 or 70 (probably even more) bottles on the go. I need to stop looking and start... well you know.

I used to have around ten bottles open but now I prefer to open fewer bottles so I can open something I haven't tried before more often. Because I only drink during weekends I don't drink that much and with ten opened bottles it'll take forever to finish them off. I'm also about to "decimate" my collection as I don't want to have that much "unrealized capital" in my whisky cabinet. I used to think it was a good idea to have the specialities or rare bottles but now the choice is so great it makes better sense to buy it there and then instead of behaving like a squirrel. I'm officially out of the collecting habitus.

I'm just starting to collect and the idea of opening a 70cl bottle seems mad!
Mainly because I don't have a lot of money, I am at the point where i go around with my little notepad trying different whisky finding which ones I really really like then ill buy one to drink.
(And still one to keep!)

I don't drink much. The mood really has to hit me to pour a whisky.
I think I average about one dram every two weeks... :(

Keeping that in mind, I probably have too many bottles open, and I just cracked the seal on a Lagavulin 21 (couldn't resist anymore).

Here's what's open now:
1. Ardbeg Uigeadail
2. The Balvenie Signature 12yo Batch No. 001
3. Blanton's Straight from the Cask
4. Chivas Regal 12yo
5. Compass Box Peat Monster
6. Cragganmore 12yo
7. Dalwhinnie 15yo
8. Dimple 15yo
9. The Glendronach 12yo
10. Glenfiddich 30yo
11. Glenkinchie 12yo
12. Highland Park 12yo
13. Jameson
14. Johnnie Walker Blue Label
15. Lagavulin 16yo
16. Lagavulin 21yo
17. Laphroaig 10yo
18. Laphroaig 15yo
19. Oban 14yo
20. Springbank 10yo
21. Talisker 10yo
22. Talisker 18yo

The Talisker 10yo and Lagavulin 16yo are almost empty, the rest are pretty much 2 or 3 drams from being full.

It still leaves another 63 bottles unopened, but it'd probably be wise not to get stuck in on those yet.

Thats over double the amount of bottles I have finished in my life, but I'm working on remedying that slowly but surely.

Always 3 to 5 bottles open and more than 20 samples waiting to be tasting.

Every week I try to taste 3 to 4 new whisky's and in vacations every day 1 (mostly samples).

Good sample sites are:

Normally about 20 0pen...

"In these times" I'm down to half a bottle of Dalwhinnie 15,
2/3rds of Lap QC;
2/3rds the new Glendronach Revival(my last purchase)

...then one or two drams of Lag DE 1991; SMWS CI; Abunadh 15; Bushmills 10; SMWS Laphroaig "Siren In a Wetsuit"; a small sample of Lagavulin 21; and 100ml of a 23 YO Bowmore bought to celebrate my dad's 90th last Feb...

And worst of all, for the first time in about 6 years, NOT A DROP OF ARDBEG IN THA HOOSE...and that's serious!

Nick, it's quite rivetting, and or heartbreaking witnessing your countdown. I shall pour a large QC later and drink to our mutual upturns, and thank you again for all the wonderful drams you've turned me onto. In the great scheme of things, your generosity will be rewarded, I feel sure. In the meantime, keep the faith...and drink slowly!!

All the best...

...but then, when you reach zero, Nick, the only way is up! then it'll be "one" then another.

Having had a few open for a few years, there's something strangely liberating about having little! i had become a bit of a slave to whisky, I fear.

And so many apparent inconveniences and worries pale in comparison with the simple joy of hugging one's little boy, I find...

Have you tried the new Glendronach Revival? would you like to?? :iwbrnt:

I currently have 21 open, with a handful on their last dregs.

That's down from a peak of 50-70 bottles, which was pretty much the norm for a little while until financial circumstances dictated otherwise that has resulted in virtually no whisky having been bought for a long time. Since then I've seen my stock slowly dwindle, with no chance of it being added to any time soon.

Is there a membership fee - if so I'll have to leave?

Thought about introducing one so I could afford more bottles, but decided not to :P

I am trying to keep the SMS to an 11 bottle opening. 1 blend, 1 Irish and 2 bourbon on top of the SMS. That would be a perfect goal for my tastes.

Do you plan to rotate the Irish/blend/bourbon bottles? Or do you have a set "stock list" so to speak?

Yes I do plan on rotating the Blend/Irish/bourbon opened. The current blend is Famous Grouse (and Black Grouse) the Irish is a freshly opened Red Breast 12 yr, although I do enjoy the Jamison 1780 or 12 yr. The Bourbon will always be a Blantons and something else. Currently a Woodford Reserve, but on the 31st I'll grab a couple bottles of the George T Stagg when it is released. past that I have no idea. I can only think 1 bottle ahead :D

Hi, I'm new.

Alan from Ireland :)

All of my whiskeys (bar a back-up bottle of Powers) is open.
They are (in no particular order):
Black Bush
Tullamore Dew
Redbreast 12yr
Powers
Powers 12yr
Glenmorangie Original
Glenfiddich 15yr
Jameson Crested Ten
Jameson (only a drop left)

I only buy whiskeys that I'll drink (unless it's a really really special offer or I'm buying in Nothern Ireland and buying in bulk to stock up. As you can see, lots of Irish. No Cooley unfortunately as the Middleton/IDL lot dominated my last visit to Newry. I only got a small (350ml) Black Bush and I'm desperately trying to save it. Such a damn good whiskey...

From my standpoint, the Countdown is a little less depressing now that you have some work. Of course, this is always subject to change but I hope not.

In thinking about it, we may be about the same point in number of bottles open.

So the countdown will continue I think

I hear you, but I think that for every bottle you choose not to buy the money should go into an emergency dramming account. Just in case you ever get to the last bottle. Then you can have tons of fun reloading the cabinets.
