I've been in the 25 -50 bracket for the last year averging around 40 open bottles which is way too much.
I had previously been around the 20 mark which was more manageable but I went through not being able to leave stuff closed ...

Decided to check if I commented on this originally ..... I did. Well it has gotten worse since then I now have over 60 bottles open

Well done Nick.. I have been killing a lot over the last 6 months. But I think that I am still in the 60s+ (need a recount)... I have killed off most of the low ones.. just about all the ones open are around the half bottle+ fill levels... a little more work, but not a bad job if you can get it.

Shooting for around 48 (that is what fits into my rolling beverage cart)..

At the moment the top 4 are looking bare. Perhaps I should reduce it to the top 3?

Last count was 51 but I've finished a few and opened another. I think it is 45 or 46. End of month will likely see another 5 or 6 hit the recycling bins. Guess it will be time to open a few too.

When are you having your "Grand Opening Party"? At the rate you are going, you'll have nothing but sealed bottles by Christmas.

Yup, 9 days to go to or own little LA festival. The plan will be to terminate about 6 bottles and open 3 or 4.

Hmm interesting thought I had, I was counting what I had open and looked in the cupboard and saw all the sample bottles I have, if I counted all of them I would have as many open as closed, I guess I need to inventory them and figure out the true number. (BTW I pour 2 10cl samples of most bottles I open that arn't standard bottlings. I figure this way I can enjoy the bottle alot longer than I would otherwise)

A 30ml dram a night and 3 on Friday and Saturday each comes to 11 drams per week. There's 23 drams in a 700ml bottle give or take, so you're looking at close on two bottles a month, and that's before your friends come over .

At a consumption rate of two bottles a month and an opened bottle being 'fresh' for 3 months, this means a max of 6 bottles open at any one time. However, if you used 250ml bottles for decanting, you get three bottles (+/-) out of a full one, meaning you can have 18 smaller bottles open at any one time and still stay in the 'fresh zone'.

Sounds like a nicely sized selection to me. Now I just need to find decent 250ml spirit bottles...laboratory bottles fit the bill nicely as they are non-reactive etc...but they're bloody pricey.

You're right, it's mostly a thumbsuck based on forum-trawling, but also comes from my own experience. In general it seems the whisky improves in the open bottle, though I have left a small enough amount in a bottle to go 'flat' and I really dislike the effect. I also notice with just a bit left in the glass after a few hours the flatness creeps in. Remnants the next morning smell completely lifeless and stale to me.

I find whisky needs to open up in the glass over 20 minutes or so. Newly opened bottles may take a bit longer, as there's been less exposure to air in the bottle. IMO this is why a whisky 'improves' in the bottle as the level drops - more air, more 'opened up'. For me, I'd rather keep what's in the bottle as close as it reasonably can be kept to what was put into the bottle in the first place, and let it open up in the glass.

I cured my OCD by starting a monthly tasting session, not a lot of scotch fans here in Cleveland Ohio but the interest has been good, I have 4 regulars and a few others interested in learning. I've started with alot of basic bottling that I may have not bought and opened otherwise. It also gives me a chance to revisit some old classics that I havn't had in a while.
