CRAGGANMORE 12yo vs Glenfiddich Solera Reserve

Prices being pretty much equal, which would you go for and which best represents the Speyside experience?

I would go for the Solera Reserve but the Cragganmore 12 probably represents speyside better. The Glenfiddich Solera Reserve is one of my favorite drams, i just love the creamy mouth-feel.

I think the Cragganmore for me.

I really appreciate the no nonsense clean taste. I have always been suprised that its the Diagio classic malt of speyside, but notwithstanding this, it is still a good "go to" whisky.

Yes I have to agree with the Crag's on this one.

The Glenfiddich style does not do it for me, except MAYBE the 21 Havana/Gran Reserva which is OK.

having said that I have'nt tried the 30yr plus expressions.

Haven't had the Crag for a while(had one with lunch at me local a few weeks back...)and maybe i was reacting to the anti-'fiddich 'hype' but i've always been particularly impressed/surprised by the solera, and my hand would tend to pick one up off the supermarket shelf rather than the Crag.

Better than the 18 IMO, and a damn fine Speysider by any standards. Crag is v. good, and deserves more time on my part, but i do rate the solera highly. it wins by a 'nose'!

Both are excellent whiskies, seem to have finished my open bottles of both, so I can't do a re-taste, but Solera has always been one of my particular favourites, so it gets my vote.
Notes to self:
1) Open another bottle of Solera - plenty to hand thanks to recent very good offer at Sainsburys.
2) buy another bottle of Cragganmore.

Cragganmore for me. It seems to have more layers of complexity than the Solera.

Solera is a godd whisky, nice and creamy, etc. but fails in my mind to bring forth the complexity of the Cragganmore.

so I stick with it, delicate,floral and multi layered, love it.

Thanks all, I went with the Glenfiddich, mainly because I was just curious as to how to compared to their entry level single malt. I did like it and will try the Cragganmore at a later date.

Have to give the nod here to Cragganmore even though I just opened a bottle of the Solera and sampled once. This (Crag 12) was the first SM that I fell for big time. So easy to drink with just the right brazen spice and deep layers of complexity. The Solera seems to sacrifice a bit of flavor for that creamy smoothness (Cheaper though). Due to this complexity, I would vote Cragganmore 12 the better Speysider.

Not a big fan of the Crag, well except for the 10 CS that I found in a bar once. The finish comes of as someone short arming a catch. Maybe I just need some older Crag. Fiddich on the other hand I enjoy. Not big on the 21 rum finish but the rest of the lineup is quite enjoyable.

Tough call! Cragganmore is more dry and herbal whereas Solera Reserve is fruity and luscious. If I had to buy one tonight, though, it would be Cragganmore.

In my mind (or should I say palate), Cragganmore 12 is far better than Glenfiddich Solera. The former is more complex, beautiful interplay of malt and smoke that defines the Speyside reputation to a "t".

Cragganmore for me right now. It has been a while since I had a Solara though so I might have to get another bottle (and it's $10 cheaper than the Crag around here).
