Wood Finishes....Where to Find Some of Them

Hello Gentleman,

I have to admit that I'm more than a bit irked with the Glenmorangie crowd as they have now phased out the Madeira Wood. I felt this was a terrible idea, and am tempted to write them a strongly worded letter regarding this foible. Ah well, to all good things there must come an end--although I was hoping for a few more years. Mind you...some may not have enjoyed the Madeira as much.

Question: Does anyone know of another Madeira Wood Scotch on the market? I do not know of one, but thought some of the more learned sorts may be aware of something. Also, any suggestions on trying a decent Rum Casked Whisky?

These are the things that wander across this empty mind.

Can't say I know of any other madeira finishes. Not even Park Ave has any other madeira finishes. However, you might find that you like port finishes. The Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban obviously springs to mind. Park Ave also has an exclusive Springbank bottling from a single port pipe. And Balvenie has a port finished scotch.

Check through the stocks for Arran, Bruichladdich and Murray McDavid*. These three/two groups are putting whisky in all sorts of wine casks. I have a Glen Spey that is finished in Madeira casks. Enjoy your search.

Gordon & Macphail have a Rum finish Caol Ila. There was a Glenmo Rum finish, but I believe that is being phased out as well.

There is also the Benriach 15yo Madeira Finish and Caol Ila has a Distillers Edition finished in dark Moscatel casks.

The second release from Ballechin (peated malt made at Edradour) has been fully matured in first-fill Madeira casks.

Whisky Magazine Tasting Notes
Nose: A vibrant initial nose with forest fruits, strawberries and orange frozen yoghurt. Vanilla and nuttiness too, that made me think of nut sprinkles on ice cream.
Palate: Rich and creamy with caramel sweetness on the tongue with lots of dried fruit (papaya, raisins, apricots, pineapple...posh muesli fruit basically). Strawberry jam and cake.
Finish: More jammy sweetness.
Overall: I've nothing against finishes, especially when they work as well as this one! Out of the three new Tyrconnell's, this one edges it for me.

Yes, it was the same with Cardhu and many others. Yesterday I bought a second bottle of Glenmorangie 10 (not the new French hand bag company label but the other older one (although I do like the new packaging)). I always enjoyed it and now it's going, same as the Maderia.

Many thanks, guys. These give me some excellent leads. I will say the Port Wood was my second favorite among them, so all is not lost. But, suffice to say, that searching for some of these and finding them will be far more fun. Not that I'm dedicated to the cause or anything!

Bushmills has a 21 year old Madeira finish Irish Whiskey. Glenfiddich 21 Gran Reserva is a rum finish SMS. The Balvenie has a 14 yo Rumwood too.
