Best peaty Malts for a Monday evening?

I just bought a bottle of Smokehead. I like it, and it's very easy sipping on a Monday night -- sweet and strangely fruity with lots of nasty phenols. I decided to test it against some other smoky bottles in the collection. After all, the cost of it was close to Ardbeg 10 so I just had to compare. I will not say what I thought, but I'll ask: What are the best peaty malts for a Monday Evening?

Totally agree - this whisky is great and one of Bruichladdich's best regularly available editions IMHO.

It's also the first whisky that I ever bought a case of, so I guess I do like it a little bit

Monday is a great day for a peaty malt. Sure there's Friday and Wednesday and Saturday -- those are good for hitting the highlands or venturing to campbeltown. But after the painful transition from Sunday to Monday and subsequent Monday itself, a good strong blast of peat is a perfect antithesis of, well, mondayness. I highly recommend it.

After my taste test I confess that Ardbeg 10 is just so much better than smokehead. I compare all peaty malts to it and, well it's always better (3D3 is great too). Haven't tried the lagavulin 12 though...

You should definitely try this if you like Lagavulin. Perhaps a little less complicated, but fantastic intensity. Like Lagavulin, more smoke and tar than peat.

I am liking it less and less. I tend to agree that there is something amiss with smokehead. Maybe just the lack of age.

I think I will start with a nice dram of Laphroaig QC and see where I go from there.

An oft overlooked SM, but one that I have been enjoying more is the Ardmore Traditional Cask. As far as I know, it's the only Highland peated whisky, but I may be mistaken here. I'm sure that if I'm wrong, others will let me know--at least I hope so! Learning is always a good thing!

The Ardmore Traditional Cask is one of my favourites too. Glenfiddich has the Caoran Reserve which is also peated. Some say it's not real peat, don't know about that. I liked the bottle a friend gave me beacause it smelled like his clothes after an evening in the pub.

Hmmm. I enjoyed the Ardmore. A nice change in peated malts. Caoran Reserve was "nice" but not naughty! Wouldn't buy a bottle.

Always seem to drift back to Ardbeg somehow...

I agree with you RB. I wouldn't buy the Caoran either, the Ardmore is a must have imo. And of course if you want to know what the best peaty malt is for a monday evening then Ardbeg would be my choice too.

My beloved Lap QC always get a look into these type of questions as it is usually a constant in my collection but I'm out at the moment

Since I'm a believer that any whisky is good for any day, how about "all of the above"?. If I had to go with just one however I'd fancy a Laphroaig 10yo Cask Strength to blow those Monday blues away!

Laphroaig Quater Cask, just has the edge for me over the 10 year old, Perfect for a dram to start the week.

I will go with the dram I had last night, Jura Superstition.

It may not pack the biggest punch of the peat brigade. To be honest I would usualy choose a Lag 16 or an Ardberg 10 over it. But it's a nice gentle dram to get the week moving along.

On a Monday, I think you'd have to say a Bowmore Dawn. Some of the other whiskies mentioned are great, but probably not well suited to a Monday. I mean Connemara, for pity's sake. If there were ever a whisky meant for a Wednesday lunchtime, that's the one...

The best would be whatever I had in my glass on Monday. Now Tuesday, well, that was definitely a good night for a Caol Ila 18 OB. Mmmmmm. . .
