A Society Tasting ?

A Society Tasting ?

Postby Spirit of Islay » Sat Nov 29, 2008 6:10 pm

Seeing that i know there are a fair few members of the SMWS here (both UK and American plus a sprinkling from Europe and possibly further afield...) , would it be possible at some point to arrange a tasting of Society Bottles ? At least i know i've got a few of these handy !
Just a thought......

Just a common one Nick . Especially as the US and other regions have different Casks , though i dare say there will be cross over bottles (seeing as we get some of the US's casks at our tastings .
Anyone from the SMWS interested in participating ?
I know some occasionally read this board.....

Definitely Gordon, I really like the idea. I'm game for this and I have more than a few Society bottles kicking around, including samples as well. Do you you have an idea on when yet?

Middle of January seem like a good time ?
Would be nice to know who exactly would be interested other than.....

Sounds like a great idea! I recently became a member and will definitely have a few bottles in my stash come mid-January. I'll be in chilly Finland till the 13th, but I'll participate if it's after that!

I'm in. Just hope by then, I won't be saying "I'm out."(of their whisky...)

Membership was a delightful gift from a close friend. I wouldn't have joined otherwise as their bottlings are mostly a little bit unaffordable for me.

But damn! they're mostly very good...

Hi,

How would this work? New to the Forum, but keen to be involved. You could say I have a couple society bottles and sound like a good reason to open one or two.

Has anyone tried the 1.141 yet? 41 year old Hoggie, its incredible! Oldest bottling we've ever released.

Thanks

Welcome aboard Darren! This particular tasting will be open for Scotch Malt Whisky Society bottlings, which ones you ask? Whatever you may have open! The tastings typically start around 7:00pm GMT and will run for several hours, with different people popping in and out, posting their tasting notes here (a specific thread will be set up), all the while conversing about the different whiskies being tasted.

I haven't tried the 1.141, but it sounds like another outstanding Farclas cask! I'm located in the U.S. so we get a totally different batch of casks released here. So I'll have a few of my own goodies that I'll be tasting. But there are several members from the Forum who are from your area, and I'm sure they'll be taking part in this tasting as well.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask. Welcome to the Forums!!

So have we more or less confirmed the 24th for this tasting?

This is good, since I'm looking to miss out on what will probably be the Talisker tasting.

Rightee oh !
On New Years eve i had a chat with Nick the Assistant Manager of the Vaults and he thinks it's a great idea . He's wrote it down in his diary and if he can't get on he'll try and get someone else in his place .
We also discussed having a Real time chat going on the same night on my sites chatroom , probably starting a bit later ( 8.30pm UK time) . This will give people a chance to talk about the society in general , there's always questions.......
I'll be dropping e-mails to a few other people i know in the Society to see if anyone else would be interested in coming on .
Ill also be posting details on the SMWS Facebook site , there's a few members on there .
Looking forward to the 24th , especially as there is a Society tasting in Newcastle on the night before......

If I can't make it, I certainly will post any questions I would have for the Society.

PS. You know, I ought to inform the LA Scotch Club guys on this one.

I'll be around, but I'm not sure when. It may have to be on the early-ish side, since I'll be going out at night to watch a US soccer match....

I'm not sure that I will be here early enough tomorrow to make the chat portion. However, I do have a question if someone will be around that can answer the question.

I can't say that I've noticed any discernable difference in the quality of the casks received between the US and the UK. Does the Society select casks for various world regions based on a taste profile or is it more along the lines that the Society chooses a cask and then it goes to the area in need of a new bottling for that distillery?

I can not make it - hope you all have a great evening, after all you deserve to be happy. My only tasting note on a SMWS dram is the Glenlivet 2:35 (posted under Christmas drams).

Looks like I will be home tomorrow because of the rain. Likely be in between 7 and 7:30 PM London time. Do we need to start a new thread?

Indeed, thanks.
I'm new in the sense that I rarely post. I've been browsing for a while but until Gordon told me about the tasting tonight I've never really taken part.
Am raring to go now though with a few SMWS bottlings open and ready.

I have indeed Gordon.
Am meeting friends later tonight (10ish) so forgive me if I dash off about 9. I may start with a few now and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions, as best I can, about any SMWS bottlings or general SMWS questions.

Hi Gordon, Nick! Thanks for taking the time to pop in Nick, I'm sure a few questions will come up. I have several bottles to taste, but I can't until later on this evening (my time).

I do have a couple questions though, in which I'll ask over on the tasting thread. :D :D
