Longmorn Live Tasting - December 18-20, 2009

I won't be much help here since I finished a Longmorn 15yo OB a few weeks ago and hate to open another right away. I will note I had a Scott's Selection Longmorn-Glenlivet 36yo,1967-2003, 52.2% abv earlier this year that was amazing. It seems there was a bunch of Scott's Selection series from various distilleries brought in the US a few years ago so if anyone runs across one it's worth the price for such a unique antique style.

I have two Longmorns open: 25 yo G&M and the 11yo Bladnoch bottling.

Nothing to add to these notes:
Ryguy wrote:Expression - Longmorn
Age - 25yo (G&M)
ABV - 40%
Colour - Light Amber
Nose - Oooooh! Wonderful sweetness with honey, baked apple pie and a touch of vanilla.
Palate - Rich, sweet and dried fruits, this really dries the palate out, in a very nice way! A touch of smoke with some vanilla lingering as well.
Finish - The finish is long and tasty (especially for just 40%), leaves a bouquet of dried fruits and overall sweetness on the palate.

Too tired to seriously taste now.

Expression - SMWS 7.52
Age - 18yo
ABV - 56.4%
Cask / Bottle No. - Refill Bourbon Hogshead
Colour - Pale Gold
Nose - Hmmm, interesting. Not as fruity as others I've had, but I do get a hint of grapes and also something floral.
Palate - Very intriguing, starts sweet like honey, then gets a little warm and spicy, with bits of bubble gum?
Finish - Nice and long finish, some pepper and the honey sweetness lingers.
Comments - Another interesting Society bottling, yet quite different from other Longmorn's I've had, but still very good indeed!

Just lurking and reading as I have no Longmorns to try, though after reading some of these I might have to go find a bottle or two after Christmas.

Nice notes everyone.

Lorne MacKillop

Age 31yo
Distilled March 1975
Cask # 3965
ABV 46%
Color Golden with a red tinge
Nose Straight from a freshly opened bottle I initially smell sherry casks, sawdust and a little peat smoke. Into a glencairn glass for further snuffing I get a bowl of cherries and raspberries with an ever so faint whiff of peat. Nose heaven!
Palate Slightly creamy with lots of fruit and wood spice.
Finish Long and lingering, a little woody but sweet with late peat

A well-aged lady struttin' her stuff, I think I'm in love! :D

Cheers!

Signatory Vintage Rare Reserve

Age 27yo
Distilled 8.5.73
Bottled 2.8.2000
Cask Sherry Butt #3962
ABV 55.1%
Color Medium Walnut
Nose Raisins and dates, fruitcake, bananas and dark chocolate.
Palate Spicy and sweet like the Thai Chili Paste and pork I had for dinner tonight (trust me, it was delicious!), chewy and honeyed. Tons of depth!
Finish Medium length, candied dates with late salt

One of several of my opened Christmas drams and a darn good one to boot!

Cheers!

I actually did have some Longmorn this weekend, but failed to notice the Live Tasting. I didn't take formal notes, but thought I'd post my impression anyway:

Longmorn 16 (OB); Bottled April 2009; 48%

On the nose I got apples, honey, cinnamon, vanilla and cereal notes. Also some direct oak scents.

The palate was pretty full bodied, especially compared to the others I was trying, and it was reasonably spicy, but not a stronger peppery spice.

On the finish, it was sweet and fruity again, and a bit malty. What stood out to me here (and maybe this will dissipate once the bottle is opened longer) is a fairly strong bitterness creating an interesting interplay with the sweetness.

I was comparing this side-by-side to Chivas 18, The Balvenie FR 10, and White Horse 12. Compared to those, this Longmorn seemed to be clearly 100% bourbon cask matured. Of course, I could be wrong.

Expression - 7.38 "An old Barber's shop"
Year - February 1968
Age - 38yo
ABV - 52.5%
Cask / Bottle No. - Sherry Butt /1 of 467 Bottles
Colour - Really Deep Mahogany !
Nose - A really musty old warehouse , Dried fruits (Raisins , currants ) , Soreen Malt Loaf (my favourite !) , Cigar tobacco and a hint of Cola cubes sweets . There is a real oloroso dryness to it as well Incredible !
Palate - Holy Cow ! Really dry sherry , again Cola Cubes sweets , Toffee apple , lovely juicy feel across the palate . The cask must have been a really good one , it's imparted all the good things and not a stitch of nastiness .

Comments - Bottled January 2007 , This takes me back to the first old Longmorn i tried at a society tasting that got me to Longmorns . A Superb drink !
