January 2011 tasting

We had discussed somewhere back in November (October?) about Sherry Xmas and I think we wanted to do "Keep the peat logs burning" for January. Any support/better suggestions? How about a when?

We haven't done Caol Ila since April 2008.

I'd prefer to do it in the 2nd half of the month as i'm on antibiotics and they didn't seem to work very well with the new year tasting. However, given my recent record at making these tastings my preferences should not be taken very seriously.

CI, peat in general, either works for me. Let's set this for the final weekend in January. I know a few folk will be unavailable the previous weekend.

It normally works and I made a couple of serious attempts to do it this time, but for some reason this beast is immune to whisky.

That would make the tasting from the 28th to the 30th. Is there one main time when we will all try to congregate or is it just a drift in and out whenever?

I'd suggest that the 7 PM British time for the 29th should be the main focus point. And the rest of the time is for those not available at that time.

I like Johan's idea for February, of doing vintages. How about either 1980-1989 or 1990-1999? I have a slight preference for the 1980's but either would be fun.

Now there's an idea. A cask vintage (1980 - 1989 or so like Sean proposed) from a specific region or type of whisky.

It's all fine by me. You guys want to do "I Want My 80s Whiskies" for February, we could do the 90s for March. If you want to focus it more so to say "80s sherry whiskies" or "80s Speysiders" that's fine too. Tumblers in your hand now.

Adam, I believe we decided on vintage 1980-1989 (or anything that would have been distilled in the 1980's, so a highland park 18yo from 2005 would qualify as it would have been distilled in the 1980's).

Edit: I have obviously drank too much tonight. Peat in Jan, then 1980's in Feb.

Not sure if I can get anything 18 years old or older right now, but I could, and definitely are leaning towards trying to pick up something laden with Peat. So if it goes back to "keep the peat fire burning" I may be ready for that.

You are right, I am retarded. Peat is Jan, 1980's is Feb.

Completely off topic here but just wanted to say the Victoria Whisky Festival last weekend, was another brilliant event! Lawrence and Ian (and others too numerous to mention) really outdid themselves this year. It was so well run, I actually witnessed Ian have a moment to sit! Congratulations Lawrence!!
