Interesting notes Sean. I can see Thyme. I was getting a mixture of the herbs/spices.

Fresh it wasn't as rich. Much better now.

Next up Bruichladdich First Born
2001-07, finished in Ridge Zin

Nose: huge vanilla hit, wax, grains, some vegetables
Palate: burnt earth-moving to dried peat, vanilla, lemon cupcakes
Finish: huge, burning peat that fades into dried kelp

This is so much more enjoyable than a fresh bottle. Almost all the zin is gone now.

P: Starts on lemon that is quickly overrun by the coal smoke, briney fish and beef jerkey.
F: Medium on the lemon, fish and coal smoke. Some salt as well.

As I recall, my "fishy" notes were more of pickled/salted herring.

F: medium on lemon zest and pine with a touch of zucchini.

I usually get some green grassy notes in Bladnoch including this bottling.

Love that whisky.

Some bandaids are coming through on the nose now. Interesting. Also, the bonfire intensifies as you take more whisky onto the palate and the finish becomes longer.

N: Vanilla, sweet peat, pistachio, baklava, and some smokey briney seaweed.
P: Vanilla, and the sweet peat. Golden raisins, baklava and some briney olives. A little hard oak around the edges. Maybe a touch of Granny Smith apples?
F: Medium long on salted golden raisin and apples with some sweet peat and a vanilla sauce drizzled on it all.

This is growing on me. I don't love it yet but I am now firmly in the enjoying it category.

I do like it. It's just weak compared to the Sig Cask Strengths I've tried alongside it. Amazing how similar yet different the notes can be.

P: Salted melon, chili pepper, roasted meats, with some flambeed banana and a light sprinkling of black pepper.
F: Medium length starting on salted melon and chili pepper. The black pepper keeps building in the background before taking over at the very end. Some polished oak and white fruits (peaches maybe?).

Nice complexity and has a nice spiciness to it.

Really good Talisker there Sean. I always find the 18 to be much more subtle than the 10, DE or 175th. Ok, even the 20 and 25s I've had. But it is complex...really good.

Macallan 18, 1991. I'm guessing this was bottled near the end of 2009 but may have been early 2010.

Nose: cinnamon, oranges, caramel, red apples
Palate: chocolate covered cherries, cinnamon, caramel, blood oranges
Finish: moderate but rich, just a touch of rubber waaaayyy at the end

This is really starting to get back to the profile of the late 1970s.

Yes the Macallan 18s are very good. I know much has been said about the quality of the 1980s vintage 18s but the 1990s vintages are really moving back towards the richness (olorosso?) of teh 1970s.

Not really dislike but not really that good either. While the Scott's sounds simplistic it is really enjoyable whereas the OB is just kind of there.

SMWSA 95.7
d: 8.97
b: 5.07
58.1

Nose: lemon pledge, waxed wood, butterscotch, caramel, vanilla
Palate: huge heather/grass notes, butterscotch underlying, caramel over vanilla ice cream
Finish: long, rough and sweet

To comment on the last part, it's got some rough grassiness yet the sweet caramel and butterscotch are fighting with it.

Speymalt Macallan 9, 1993. Bottled 2002 or 03. I don't have the bottle anymore as I moved it to a smaller bottle.

Nose: tangerines, cinnamon, some graininess, fungal
Palate: portabellas sauteed in corn oil, orange zest, cinnamon-muted
Finish: just kind of fading off the palate

This is something I enjoy but not for everyone.

HP 12, roundy shoulders bottled between 2000 and 2007. Hard to read the codes at this point.

Nose: heather honey, marzipan, whispy smoke
Palate: Bit o'honey and chocolate, waxy smoke, orangey
Finish: moderately long, relaxing, sweet yet smokey

Arran Chat Margaux. I don't have the actual bottle anymore but these single casks were from the mid-2000s

Nose: Almost like cranberry in caramel, little pungeant, pomengranites
Palate: pungeant, kind of negative. I know many who like this but it's just not me. cinnamony, spicey
Finish: long, going from cringe to almost satisfying as things mellow.

I would expect that the PX is manifesting in the spicey/pepperiness of this. Not something I would expect from bourbon casks. The spice and pepper is what makes this one nice.

28.9.96
17.11.95
cask 222

Nose: waxy, light earthiness, vanilla
Palate: rich, creamy, waxy, dried peat, little bit of charcoal
Finish: long, earthy

I do like this but it reveals itself differently each time.

The traverso bottling is one of the best Glenfarclas you can find when you account for price point. Nearly as good as the Beltramos 15 and available @ 3 for 150! Holds up against some of the best Glenfarclas bottlings w/o accounting for price!

Nose: Grape juice, cereals, wax
Palate: floral, grapefruit, musky
Finish: fades fast, medicinal aftertaste

Balvenie 21yo Port finish it ain't. I have a love/hate relationship with this one. Once in a while it's really enjoyable, often it is so-so.

Nose: Orange liquor, kumquats, sherry
Palate: Maple syrup, hint of wood must (not unpleasantly so)
Finish: Wood, dark chocolate, smooth

Wow. As I was saying in another thread, this was a birthday present from my wife. (71 is my year). Pleasurable on many levels to be drinking one so old.

That Macallan sounds rich. :smoke:

The Arran has on the label "Finished in a Lepanto PX Brandy Cask from Glonzalez Byass". I would think the singular cask would mean only a single cask finish.
