Nose: bananas, herbs, cinnamon, lemon-fennel oil, leather
Palate: mild anise, dried spices and herbs, lemon juice
Finish: soft, lemon and licorice

This used to be a much bigger hit on the licorice. Probably a negative to those that like that component while for those that don't it is probably a positive.

Sig Scapa 9, 1990-00, cask 3999

Nose: lemons, fresh and dried herbs, freshly cooked bread, cooked squash
Palate: peanut butter cookies, fresh herbs
Finish: light, herbal

G&M Dailuaine, 1997-09, cask 12612

Nose: lime, basil, leather, wax, yellow cake (not radioactive), neccos (peppermint)
Palate: spearmint, neccos (chocolate), fresh mint leaves, dried eucalyptus leaves and bark
Finish: very long, chocolate/neccos and mint

Wow, I really love this whisky tonight. I usually just like it.

N: Big lemon, pie crust, green banana and slight white pepper. Touch of thyme?
P: lemon juice, lemon meringue pie, a touch of cooking spices (thyme?) and the green banana shows back up. Pie crust?
F: Medium long on lemons, a little salt and some white pepper. slight doughyness at the very end.

Nose: vanilla, fishing harbour-kelp fish brine diesel oil, charred lemon rinds
Palate: charcoal briquets, lemon juice, seaside bonfire
Finish: lingering oiliness and simmering embers

As I continue to dram this whisky, I get some brownie or fudge mix...you know, when you first mix it up.

N: Big coal smoke, lemon, smoked fish, peat and beef jerkey.
P: Starts on lemon that is quickly overrun by the coal smoke, briney fish and beef jerkey.
F: Medium on the lemon, fish and coal smoke. Some salt as well.

Next up Bruichladdich First Born
2001-07, finished in Ridge Zin

Nose: huge vanilla hit, wax, grains, some vegetables
Palate: burnt earth-moving to dried peat, vanilla, lemon cupcakes
Finish: huge, burning peat that fades into dried kelp

This is so much more enjoyable than a fresh bottle. Almost all the zin is gone now.

N: Lemon zest, pine, nuts and a little varnish. Fresh green vegetables maybe some zucchini?
P: Similar to the nose. Some lemon zest, pine tree and nuts. Zucchini and a little vanilla.
F: medium on lemon zest and pine with a touch of zucchini.

Agreed, but I kept getting the pine and it was throwing me off.

Some bandaids are coming through on the nose now. Interesting. Also, the bonfire intensifies as you take more whisky onto the palate and the finish becomes longer.

Palate: bing cherries, cinnamon, bread notes, plum wine
Finish: big, cherry pie

Laphroaig 18 L9 141

N: Vanilla, sweet peat, pistachio, baklava, and some smokey briney seaweed.
P: Vanilla, and the sweet peat. Golden raisins, baklava and some briney olives. A little hard oak around the edges. Maybe a touch of Granny Smith apples?
F: Medium long on salted golden raisin and apples with some sweet peat and a vanilla sauce drizzled on it all.

This is growing on me. I don't love it yet but I am now firmly in the enjoying it category.

P: Vanilla, and the sweet peat. Golden raisins, baklava and some briney olives. A little hard oak around the edges. Maybe a touch of Granny Smith apples?
F: Medium long on salted golden raisin and apples with some sweet peat and a vanilla sauce drizzled on it all.

This is growing on me. I don't love it yet but I am now firmly in the enjoying it category.

I do like it. It's just weak compared to the Sig Cask Strengths I've tried alongside it. Amazing how similar yet different the notes can be.

N: black pepper, salt, hints of chili pepper, smoke, and some fruit (melon and banana).
P: Salted melon, chili pepper, roasted meats, with some flambeed banana and a light sprinkling of black pepper.
F: Medium length starting on salted melon and chili pepper. The black pepper keeps building in the background before taking over at the very end. Some polished oak and white fruits (peaches maybe?).

Nice complexity and has a nice spiciness to it.

Really good Talisker there Sean. I always find the 18 to be much more subtle than the 10, DE or 175th. Ok, even the 20 and 25s I've had. But it is complex...really good.

Nose: cinnamon, oranges, caramel, red apples
Palate: chocolate covered cherries, cinnamon, caramel, blood oranges
Finish: moderate but rich, just a touch of rubber waaaayyy at the end


This is really starting to get back to the profile of the late 1970s.

Yes the Macallan 18s are very good. I know much has been said about the quality of the 1980s vintage 18s but the 1990s vintages are really moving back towards the richness (olorosso?) of teh 1970s.
