February 2012 Live Tasting - Short Supply

[Ganga]

It was recommended so here we go. Those whiskies that are short in supply. Small batches, single casks/barrels, limited editions. Saddle up.

95/16 Linkwood Binnys Cask.

Nose: Buttered popcorn, vanilla, perhaps a touch of mint, and some sage.

Taste: Pure vanilla extract, and a hell of a lot of simple syrup, with a touch of butter to it also.

Finish: Brown sugar and vanilla, medium long.

97/12 Glenburgie Cask No 8544 (Binnys Cask)

Nose: Cocao Powder, Burnt sugar, raisins.

Taste: A fruity dark chocolate, an incredible bit of sweetness, almost in a icewine sense, but much darker and full of dried fruit.

Finish: Raisins and hot chocolate with marshmellows. Medium.

Eagle Rare 10 Year old Tiffany Wine and Spirits (Kalamazoo MI) Cask.

Barrel number 312.


Nose: Gingerbread cookies, cinnamon sticks, a little bit of a paint thinner aroma.
Taste: Cinnamon and maple syrup, hints of cherry.
Finish: A bit spirity, lots of toasted oak hints, and spices and cinnamon.

Nose: vanilla, cinnamon, rye, oak, little citrus
Palate: nutty, huge rye, liquid vanilla
Finish: lots of vanilla with hints of rye

This is kind of drying on the palate.

Nose: waxy, soft peat, lemon rinds
Palate: leathery peat, sharp tangerines, earthy
Finish: long, more of the leathery peat

This is really enjoyable. And yes, I like this more than the OB 14.

Wathen's Single Barrel 8 yo, 47%

Really too far gone to give great notes but the palate is very interesting. It is like carmelized cinnamon molasses.

Nose: huge vanilla, light citrus (lemons and limes), honeydew
Palate: vanilla, finely ground black pepper, malty
Finish: long, firey malt

water gives a richer nose, better palate (added fruitiness and reduced pepper), and a shorter more malty finish.

Palate: meadow, canteloupe
Finish: light and grassy.
