July 2012 Tasting - Summer Breeze

That's it, time to break out the summer drams. You know, those drams you want on a warm summer's eve. Ok, not really applicable to Scotland but for us folks down in the southwest it gets warm and who wants one of those big peaty thangs.

Nose: sea breeze, tropical fruit mix, pumpkin meat (where'd that come from)
Palate: honey dew, grist, salty iodine, pineapple
Finish: big, sweet fruits and sea influence. way down the road, squash

How can you not like this dram. Great whisky that comes with a budget price.

Great King Street Blend

N: Barley sugar, cantaloupe, peaches, honey and some grains. A little vanilla and creme brulee. A hint of salt and smoke.
P: Honey, barley sugar, malt and cantaloupe. Some vanilla and white fruits.
F: Barley sugar, honey, malt and some salt. Vanilla and creme brulee with a hint of peaches and cantaloupe. A little smoke at the very end.

A rather enjoyable blend and works well when it is hot outside.

Old Pulteney 12yo

N: Salted peaches, mango, barley and honey. Slight bitter note as well.
P: Salted peaches and mango. Some barley and honeydew. Honey and a little wood smoke.
F: Salted peaches and mango. Some honey and wood smoke with a growing saltiness.

Just a great whisky for the price.

Ancnoc 12yo

N: Honey barley, honey, lemons, limes and nectarines.
P: Honey, barley, nectarines and lemons. A little salt and vanilla.
F: barley sugar, honey and nectarines. A little salt, vanilla and some wood spice.

A very nice whisky and it works well in the warm weather of summer.

N: vanilla, pineapples, mango, touch of wax, dry spices
P: coconut, tropical fruits, lively spices
F: satisfying and fruity

N: sweet bread (not sweetbreads), little bit of straw, dried spices, dried peaches
P: buns dipped in honey, salted mango, vanilla, pineapple juice
F: moderate, sweet meaty fruits contrasted with citric fruits

Tamdhu 10

N: grassy yet notes of straw, squash (pumpkin?), sweetness like dough
P: squash (summer), more straw, dough
F: longer than the Glenmo, lots of sweet malt

N: sour grass, ground barley, cinnamon sticks
P: green summer grass, melon, dry spices
F: long, fruity and grassy

I think this is much improved from when it was opened about 9 mos ago. Tasty beverage.

N: peaches and straw, little bit of ground grain
P: more peaches, hint of cocoa powder, grain
F: short, peaches and grain

Royal Lochnagar 12yo

N: Honey, heather and grains. Some straw and some slightly sour melon.
P: Honey, heather, and barley. Some peaches and melon with a touch of caramel.
F: Honey, peaches and melon with some barley.

More honey than I remember.

Signatory CS Rosebank 1990 15yo

N: Lemon creme pie, lemons, vanilla, barley, and a hint of oak. Slight grassy note.
P: Lots of lemons and all type. Lemon juice, lemon rind, lemon yogurt, and lemon creme pie. Some vanilla and a little oak.
F: Medium long on lemons (all types again), vanilla and a growing grassy note.

A rather nice Rosebank, simple but enjoyable.

interesting contrast compared to the one I just had. Mine featured lots of grass but no lemon. Enjoy.

AD Rattray Balblair 1990 16yo sherry cask

N: lemon yogurt, strawberries, vanilla and some wood varnish.
P: lemon yogurt, strawberries and vanilla. Barley, wood varnish, oak, and sour lemons. Rather mouth puckering like a lemon warhead for the first few seconds.
F: medium long on strawberries and lemons with some vanilla and oak. Sour and slightly bitter.

A nice Balblair that even from a first fill sherry cask still tastes of summer.

I don't think I have ever got, salted mango or pineapple juice from Glenmo 10. Hmm. I might need to buy a bottle again sometime or sample from your bottle.

Very interesting combo of flavors for a sherry casked whisky. Sounds yummy.

I don't think I have ever got, salted mango or pineapple juice from Glenmo 10. Hmm. I might need to buy a bottle again sometime or sample from your bottle.

I haven't sat down and really examined a glass in awhile either. I remember getting some tropical fruits previously but I don't think it was specific fruits when I did. Just some perceptions tonight.

97-13 SV UCF Cragganmore Cask 1130

Getting massive amounts of candy and green apple from this today, both on the nose and on the palate. This Cragganmore has a bit of a finish, reminiscent again of green apple, and hard caramel candies. In addition to the green apple, there are subtle hints of other fruits, touch of mango, kiwi, and pineapple to really liven it up. More sweet and candy like than fruity, but a wonderful summer dram.

99-09 GM Dufftown Cask 8787


Its reputation remains as the Tropical Fruit punch dram. Though it is starting to loose that, developing a slight cream flavor and richness to it, along with more temperate fruits. Good dose of strawberries in the dram today. Aroma though is a little spirity, but it is a CS whisky.

95-15 SV Imperial cask 50314

Nose is light, full of malt, with a good bit of candy and cookies. Taste is mostly malt, but hints of vanilla, and coconut, with more of the coconut and vanilla coming out on the finish.

Surprisingly light for 57.4% abv.
