Laphroaig Triplewood.

Peat and saw dust. Very dry. Some light sherry and vanilla. Pencil shavings and fresh oak. Not a horrible whisky, just not very good. I would not buy again unless it was under $40.

Soft peat, vanilla, wood smoke, some oak and a hint of citrus. Sea air and salt. A little diesel and tar mixed in.

N: Candied and dried fruits. Oranges, and sadly today I am getting an odd musky cologne smell.

T: Sweet, maple syrup, and spices ( cloves, nutmeg and cinnamon).

F: Way too spirity.


This bottle hopefully is just in an off phase. Really hasn't been that good lately.

Not big peat, or big sherry, but rather a touch of a peat and a touch of sherry, but I still think tis a very christmas time dram.

Benromach 10.

N: Benedictine and Brandy, with a touch of cigar smoke. Other than that quite a bit of boiled cabbage.

T: The candy goodness you would expect from a sherried whisky, dried rasins, touch of oranges, and spice, to go with a good bit of sugary sweetness. Just a touch of smoke to make things seem a little dry.

F: A lot of the raisins and oranges and spices, mixed with a slightly more prnouced smoke dryness.

Raisins, walnuts, figs and loads of sherry. Some balsamic vinegar and some mushrooms. A very good sherried whisky.

Ardbeg Renn

Wood smoke, salt and lemons. Some smoked fish, vanilla, and oak. A touch of tar and sea air. Peat but it is not in your face. The finish is completely different. Much more peaty, with some diesel fuel and tar. Lemons are still present and so is the wood smoke, smoked fish and salt.

I am going to miss this bottle.

Bowmore Legend

Nose: like I am trimming the lavendar in the backyard, wood smoke, vanilla
Palate: wood smoke, little bit of lavendar boarding on perfume, touch of vanilla, caramel
Finish: moderate, lots of burning oak, little bit of chocolate

This reminds me more of late fall with the dyring flowers and wanting to sit around a campfire.

Nose: huge cinnamon and caramel, wood polish, cinnamon buns
Palate: soft caramel chews, cinnamon, honey, nutmeg, Xmas cider
Finish: Big robust, cinnamon and caramel

This is XMAS.

Laga DE 1991. Wonderful smoked sherry, with walnuts, raisins, soft peat, and some smoked fish. Christmas cake and some oak. Wonderful. Best Laga DE that I have had

Palate: cinnamon buns with icing, touch of oak, nutmeg
Finish: rich and soft, lots of sweets and spices

G+M Cask Old Pulteney 1993/2007 13yo first fill sherry cask 2402 59.9%

Raisins, cherries, christmas cake, fruit cake, and chocolate cake. a little salt, and vanilla. Hints of soft smoke, cranberry and licorice.

The sherry is crazy powerful

N: A lot of very warm spices. Slight touch of actual sherry. Almost like a spiced syrup aroma.

T: So incredibly sweet and spiced. Good dose of raisins, figs, and touch of dried apricots.

F: A wonderful continuation of the palate. Continues on for a decent time.

Funny, I noted a lot of tropical fruits in this, nothing that reminded me of Xmas. Rather Hawaii. Also some big vanilla notes.

This is very good. The nose reminds me a lot of the PLOWED Benriach. Guess I should also post up on that one too.

I had the PLOWEDRiach earlier tonight. It was truly amazing tonight. Loads of black tea, glazed walnuts, dried cranberries, smokey too. This is one of the really good bottles from the last 3 or 4 years.

Glenrothes 15yo 1990 Cadenhead's 59.5% sherry butt

Nose : Bitter chocolate, raisins, hot sand, carbide and turnips. Definite signs of sulphur.
Taste : A flash of super whisky before the sulphur kicks in and crushes it beneath cordite and spent matches. This is the kind of sulphur that seems to appeal to some folk.
Finish : High temperature and a bit harsh with more spent matches.
Comment : I suspect that some will love this. I prefer clean casks and so this loses points from me. A pity, because without the sulphur it could have been great.

Convalmore 28yo 1977 57.9% OB

Nose : Soft fruits, strawberries, peaches, guava, melon, cloves and mint
Taste : Softly spicy, jam and fizzy sherbet. Oily, delicious and minty fresh with water.
Finish : Long lingering fruit wrapped in crunchy brown sugar, cinnamon and peppery spices.
Comment : A whisky of subtlety and refinement.

Longmorn 20yo Whiskybroker.co.uk 1992 sherry hogshead 55.5%

Nose : Burnt sugar, almonds, mango, gooseberry and rhubarb. Water turns it into a singed rhubarb and apple crumble.
Taste : Singed toast, spices, cinnamon. A little musty with water.
Finish : Sugary and spicy with a light fruit burst late on.
Comment : Very nice whisky

This was one of my least favorite ones through the mide 20s. It is much better after being open for 4 to 5 years. Still winey but big caramel notes, nutty, oranges, xmas cider. Much better than when first opened.

wife poured a bunch of water in...guessing it is around 46%. Still rich but it loses the power. Many would probably consider it better as the caramel becomes very rich. Still good....and enjoyable.
