June-July 2013 Tasting

Postby Ganga » Tue Jun 18, 2013 10:53 pm

Let's make this about summertime drams. Those light fruity whiskies you enjoy so much when the weather turns hot...a favorite bourbon...on the rocks?

Right Sean....

Livet 12...out on the porch on a warm summer's eve...or pre-summer as it is the 19th.

Nose: honey, oak, meaty fruits, dried coconut
Palate: honey, fleshy fruits-salted mango, wood
Finish: slight astringency, tropical fruits.

OP 17 from a 1/2 soldier

N: mixed fruit bowl, salt sprinkles, grist
P: tangerines, dough, sea salt, pine resin
F: long, tropical fruits and sea air

this is so much more intense....better than the 12. The balance is to die for in this bottle.

Hill&Hill...a very old bottling

N: carmel, xmas nuts, grains
P: rye, carmel, mint
F: short, minty carmel

It has an "old" feel to it. I do like it but there is also something a little artificial.

BenRiach 12.

Just because I am getting sick of reproducing a multitude of near identical tasting notes in many different places let me just say this Malt tastes like a well fashioned blend. By that I mean it is acheived as a single malt the profile a lot of blenders look for when creating a well fashioned whisky. Touch of grass, some vanillia, a mix of light refreshing fruits, and sweet honeyed cereal grains. Those are the themes running throughout the entire enjoyment of this Single Malt.

A very good summer dram though it is a little heavy.

Lombard Jewels of Scottland Springbank 50%

Tomato, kiwi, green grapes, and a lot of pineapple juice. It also has a nice underlying note of salted caramels. When on the palate the sea salted caramels dominate, but the fruits emerge in full force on the finish. The finish is actually reminiscent of a mix of salt and the whole tropical pack of starbursts.

This could go either way, probably more of a mid fall or mid spring dram. The Laddie Ten. Weird having so much peat without the smoke. Gives an abundance of vegetables permeating throughout the entire dram. I think what makes it close to summer is the rather nice cool and refreshing notes of raw baby carrots, cucumber, and celerey. Rounded out with a subtle diluted honey sweetness makes it very plesant if not a touch heavy.

Alright this Glen Scotia is an incredible summer dram. It is a fruit bomb, the most notable of which is Peaches. The taste honestly felt like eating and drinking the syrup of a little pre packed peaches cup. A very light and refreshing dram, incredibly complex! Finish while incredibly long is the only part of this whisky that feels lack luster.

When is Old Pulteney not a summer dram? This one takes the term salted mangos to a whole new level. The mango is similar intensity, but wow heavy dose of salt in this one! Touch of vanilla to round and smooth things out. Similar but strikingly different to the OBs. This one sets itself apart due to extra salty character, and also the fact that it comes across as far sharper than the well rounded OBs

OMC Dailuaine 34, 50%
DL3976

N: dried herbs and spices - cinnamon, caraway, cardamom, nutmeg, light waxiness, dry grass
P: very similar palate as the nose but more waxy
F: long with lots of dried spices and wax

This is very good whisky. Each phase just serves to continue the previous one.

Nose: Salt, pears, vanilla, straw, and a plethora of malted barley.

Taste: This is where the summer aspect comes in, sweet, and full of fruits, red apples and pear dominate.

Finish: The wood and vanilla notes transfter into honeyed cereal in a rather long finish.

I've heard time moves slower when the Mother in Law is in town, but this is getting rediculous.

Signatory Vintage 1994 Caperdonich 16 year old cask 96518

Thick and oily on the nose lots of malted grains. That profile stays through the taste, though getting far lighter with wildflower honey, and green apples, with vanilla. It also has the slightest touch of pineapple to round things out.

For its high proof it is certainly an enjoyable summer dram, though on the heavy side.

I would like to say "better late then never", but that would require him to actually be late. Right now it is starting to look like never.
